I'm kind of stunned that this man's passing went unnoticed here. RIP, great one.
I mentioned it to my husband, teh sports nut. He was saddened, but it seems like Mr. McKay lived a full life, so rest in peace. At least he didn't live to see the blow-out at Belmont. I read that horse racing was his favorite sport, and the third leg of the Triple Crown was so, so disappointing.

Heh. Pips met me & Hugh at a bar near my job before we went to the Bottle Rockets show the other night. It was just after the race and one of the barflies informed me that I was 'sitting in a dead man's seat.' He'd just lost $10K on the race.

He was one of the greats, a real class act.

Watching all the tributes to him on TV brought back my deeply-repressed memories of those God-awful yellow ABC Sports jackets. When they were showing the footage of him reporting on the Olympic tragedy, half my brain was on the moment and the other half was screaming AHHHH JIM TAKE IT OFF MY EYES THEY BLEED.

He was awesome indeed. Plus, he lived near where I grew up - on a beautiful horse farm. I saw he passed at home and it comforted me that I could see in my minds eye where that was.

I do think Costas is his heir. I love him too, and see the influence McKay had on the man.

I like Costas, too. Great broadcast voice, serious knowledge, and a sense of humor.
