Is anyone up for a good cry? My mom just told me the most heartbreaking story...

[More:]The last time she was in Mumbai, my mother got to know about one of our relatives, and the desperate condition they're now in. This particular family is extremely wealthy. The father of the children was the principal of one of the most well reputed schools in the city, and made sure that all of his children attended some of the finest schools. They were all very bright and turned out to be excellent students.

The problem started when they reached the age of marriage and were prohibited to do so by their mother, since she had an abnormal fear of someone taking control of her wealth and her family estate. She would turn away the best of suitors and before soon the children had passed what was considered to be a marriageable age. My mother tells me that they fell into a depression afterwards and are now suffering from various kinds of mental illnesses. The youngest of the children (a girl) was somehow lucky enough to have not met the same fate, however, her story is no less depressing.

She was so desperate to get married that she started a relationship with the guy who lived on the footpath outside her house and is now married to him. He beats her and has become the king of the household (along with his mother who also moved in). The girl doesn't care about what kind of treatment is being meted out to her since she has someone to share her life with.

The mother unfortunately passed away before getting a taste of all of this, so doesn't know that her worst fears have been realized despite her obsessive compulsion to try and protect her wealth at the detriment of her children's well being...

(Seriously, how fucked up is this???)
I just moved to Delhi to live with my family and I've started realizing just how much of our culture/society is based in all sorts of psychoses about marriage and wealth. The whole point of a boy's existence is to get good grades and do well and bring home a nice (i.e. polite, quiet, willing to help around the house and obey her mum-in-law not to mention dowry-laden) bride. The whole point of a girl's existence is to get good grades and be pretty so she can get married to a "good" i.e. rich guy.

The marriage thing is just a side-effect of a parochial society but I'm not sure why wealth (and hiding it even!) is such a big deal.

There is some odd pressure on me about going into foreign service and "be a diplomat just like your dad" for the social status. And I turn around and say hey if I follow my passion in the private sector and get rich doesn't wealth get you status anyway? (Left unsaid is "since when did social status matter so much?")

In a way the most sophisticated parts of society harbour downright backcountry outlooks. Then again that phenomenon is hardly limited to any particular country.

Jeez this sounds like something out of a Sydney Sheldon paperback. Depressing.

Didn't they get to have careers after all that education? I wonder why they never met anyone that way.
