What's your favorite way to treat a cold? The NyQuil, it does nothing.
It used to be NyQuil until they took the good stuff out of it. Damn.
I prefer to hit the cold with the strongest pseudophedrine they'll let me buy from behind the counter. 12 hour lasts about 6 - barely enough for a night's sleep. And I go through tissues by the case.
The decongestant I bought to get me through work yesterday was worthless because the pharmacy was closed and all that had was fake no-meth-making-stuff on sale.
They put the good stuff back into NyQuil. You need to get NyQuil-D which is sold behind the counter. After work did a shot, knocked me out last night.
Today I feel much better and the congestion and runny nose has been replaced by phlegminess.
Hot, hot dark tea with lemon and honey squeezed in. The hot tea and the steam will open up your congestion and phlegminess, and the lemon and honey will soothe your mucous membranes.
What is going on??? Hubby and I are recovering from tsunami colds, and Baby is a mess with his cold. He runs when he sees us approaching with a Kleenex. And it's the end of May! We should be done with this business for several months.
I like to hit it hard with Sudafed and either Advil or Tylenol, drink hot lemonade and eat Lifesavers. My current favorite are the white ones that are orange flavored. Very soothing. Hope you feel better soon.
I am not one of those "Vitamin-C treats everything" people, but I have found that colds bother me less if I drink a glass or two of orange juice. But there's no real replacement for pseudoephedrine.
I love DayQuil, but I don't know if they changed its formula as well as NyQuil's.
TheraFlu makes me happy when I take it, but only marginally more so than a playfully inflated dose of Dextromethorphan (NO GUAIFENESIN) and soup and ice cream OJ and all that.
I took some DayQuil liqui-caps yesterday. Those things are freaking horse pills. I gagged twice trying to get them down.
In other news, the dogs toppled the kitchen garbage and it was strewn all over the floor. Cleaning up after them was not exactly what I wanted to be doing this morning.
Hot rum with honey & lemon (about a jigger of rum, 2 generous tbsp honey, juice of a lemon, hot water to fill the mug), oj with lots of ice, endless kleenex, cats, duvet, self-pity.
I've done the DNA sample and all that shiz in order to get some of the best cold medicine ever: Tylenol Cold (it comes in day and night versions and if you can get the kind that has some sort of weird ass coating on it called 'cool breeze' it's even better because when you swallow them, they feel all cool and tingy as they go down your throat).
It's amazing.
I follow it up with copious nappage, loads of OJ, and watching bad television.
Sudafed Cold & Sinus. The little red pills that you have to sign your soul to the government before they will sell any to you. I mostly get sinus headaches when I get sick, and these things are great.
Then I pair it with my couch, a blanket, my napping dog, a box of tissues, some cartoons, ginger ale, and a bendy straw.
The bendy straw is the key ingredient to getting better.
None of that stuff works for me and now that I'm diabetic I can't use it anyway. I usually just take ibuprofen by the handful, use a squirter decongestant thingie (like Dristan, which I'm also not supposed to use but I can't sleep with a stuffed up nose) and sleep for hours and hours.
Seconding the ginger tea. That, and my homebrew "huffy tea": start with equal parts ground licorice and sassafras root, then add ground dandelion root, cardamom and caraway. If you're into that sort of thing, you can add a little kava kava, too.
Sounds weird, and it's definitely an acquired taste, but it helps. Well, me anyway.

Wow, that sounds like it might be good, or maybe awful, but I'd give it a try, especially if I could get the ingredients fresh. Probably too expensive (for me anyway) to buy all the stuff to make a batch though.
Yeah, I'm not much on the herbal stuff except inasmuch as it makes you feel psychologically better, but ginger tea really DOES seem to help. Also, vitamin A. Fuck C, it's all about A. Get lots of vitamin A from carrots/carrot juice, greens like swiss chard or kale, or even Airborne.
If you want to suffer less WHILE you have a cold, and you don't want to give your DNA for psuedephedrine, consider Mucinex. It's like a decongestant, but it somehow thins out your mucus secretions instead of doing whatever it is decongestants tend to do. And benadryl. Benadryl will help stop your runny nose and help you sleep.
Oh, and breathe in heavy steam and/or use a saline solution to irrigate your sinuses frequently. Simply Saline is a godsend, and works so much better for me than stuff like Ocean.
And, of course, alcohol (the drinking kind) helps make it all more bearable.
Just don't forget that most of what I've mentioned above dehydrates you, especially in combination, and so you need to make the frequent-drinking-of-water your new, temporary religion.
Oh, and they say orgasms are good for the immune system (seriously, I have read this somewhere!)
