Friday 3-point update Friday 3-point update. [More:] 1. Just got my first-anniversary job review. Even though I slack around a lot because the work is very easy, I got an excellent review and a raise.

2. I'm going to look into taking anti-anxiety or depression meds for the first time, because I don't want to be feeling this way anymore. At first I thought that it was the breakup that triggered it, but I think it just opened a can of worms that was already there.

3. Today I'm going to my favorite restaurant on the planet, Fire & Ice in Harvard Square. It's make your own stir-fry, with great qualilty meats and excellent sauces. If it weren't so noisy, it would be perfect. I'm such a regular that they have the diet coke with cherries for me at the bar by the time I get there; I like being taken care of this way.
1. I had a really nice vacation in North Carolina, and really am dragging ass this week on graveyard shift (I work a rotating shift). But:

2. I got a new job at work, so after these 2 weeks on graveyard, no more nights for me, and my new boss is already giving me fun new projects to work on.

3. Leaving now to pick up my first pinhole camera film that I've exposed. It's from a camera I converted over myself. Not sure what to expect.

1. I went to Panera Bread to meet friends this morning. It was fun. I was glad to see them. I haven't seen some of them in months.

2. After that I went to Barnes and Noble. I noticed a book, Snoop: What Your Stuff Says About You on a display. I didn't buy it because it was 25 bucks, and I had already had some books in my hand (kid books) that I wanted more. Now I'm listening to an interview with the author. It's kind of fun.

3. I'm having a new fridge delivered today. Ours died last weekend.

1. Expect I will leave work early and have a few beers.
2. Save energy tonight by making a good dinner and then parking on the couch to catch up on DVR.
3. After months of weekends crammed to the teeth with errands and shopping and yard work and house work, finally two full days of (almost) nothing-to-do-ness. Except finish the play room and nursery, which will mainly entail wall hangings and the like.

Ooh, can't wait to see the pinhole pics, eeks!

1) Hasn't been as productive a work week as I'd have liked.

2) I bought some special cat-safe wipes to clean my cat's ears with, but so far haven't had the nerve to tackle the job.

3) A friend surprised me with a copy of this yesterday as thanks for a video job I did for him. I am super excited about this, since I wanted this set but hadn't had the cash for it. Yay, cool friend!

1. Have weird almost cold. Feeling sad and sorry for myself.

2. Just went through a whole bunch of ridiculous drama with son and son's school and fuck, fuck, fuckity fuck fuck. He has a lot of free floating adolescent male anger around these days. I don't know how to deal with it. We're both really stressed out.

3. One of my two best friends is leaving for Australia tomorrow; she won't be back for 6 weeks and then she'll be back just long enough to pack up her stuff to move there. There goes my drinking buddy, shoulder to cry on, neighborhood pal who will loan me her lawnmower, late night conversationalist, partner in crime and everything else. My life is going to be very different and nowhere near as much fun without her.

1. Going to see a friend's band tonight. Yay!
2. Weather is lovely, which makes me happy.
3. REALLY have to get stuck into work next week.

1. Working from home today. The only person I spoke to was the postman, and that was just two words. But he brought this, so I love him.

2. Tomorrow I'm going to go to Romford to buy myself a suit for interviews. I am serious about looking for a new job.

3. I also need to look for a wedding outfit - I have two weddings to attend in June and can wear the same dress to both, as they are two sets of people who don't know each other. But I get very stressed shopping for clothes. Especially if it's not jeans or t-shirts. Dresses scare me. But these are weddings where only a dress will do.

1. Boyfriend's leaving town today so for the next week I is a single gal. Barhopping, anyone?
2. Am keeping an eye on the National Spelling Bee and as always am amazed how these kids will spell these weird words I've never heard of, and then go down on some word I know very well.
3. I need to buy a new suitcase and I could use a jacket, but I really want to buy both in person not online and good luck finding the jacket at this time of the year.
posted by JanetLand 30 May | 12:58
Ugh, I hate shopping for clothes.

Honestly, Jan, I buy everything online now. It's a lot easier for me to measure myself, then use their little chart to get the exact right size. However, I've had a terrible time buying dresses online - they never, ever fit right. But maybe you could buy a dress online and then get it tailored?

1) I got my car inspected, with no difficulty. Nonetheless, I'd been stressing about it for a month. One year until I have to stress about that again.

2) I have a party to go to tomorrow! And on Sunday! I didn't realize I had either of them on the agenda, so that's a welcome surprise.

3) I have three new toys: an iron, a cast-iron dutch oven, and an immersion blender. I'm trying to figure out what I can make to use all of them at once.

At 4ft 11 and curvy, I have to try things on. Wallis, Next or Monsoon are my best options, I think.

2. They are filming an interview with Alice Waters downstairs so we all have to tiptoe til 1 pm.

1. Exhausted from a night of frustrating dreams - insane deadlines on life-or-death tasks for which I had no resources. Somehow, Colonel Klink was involved.

2. Not wanting to go to work today, which may or may not be related.

3. Leftover salad for lunch. That's actually OK, since it was a really good salad.

mygothlaundry, you may already know it, or you may already be doing most of what it recommends, but I really liked William Pollack's work on "The Boy Code"; I read Real Boys before starting my counseling internship at the boys' high school and it helped me tremendously. (And Pollack's actually pro-feminist, unlike a lot of the other researchers writing on boys and masculinity that I came across, which makes him (1) not infuriating and (2) very pro-mom, both of which are nice.) I don't mean to step on toes or force advice on you, I just really liked the book. And I'm still in recovery mode from dealing with teenage boys' emotional health all year -- it's a *huge* job, and I don't envy you! -- and want to pass on all the resources I can marshall!

Anyway. Topic!

1. I worked yesterday, so I'm lounging around today until this afternoon, when I have six hours of class, but this professor is very very cool and I feel like I'm learning a lot, so that's ok.

2. I've been seeing a new therapist through a woo-woo east-west therapy place, and I can't believe how much it's helping. It's nice not to have to hide my own woo-woo side when trying to talk through some of my stuff; it's like I get to drop a layer of intellectual remove. It's scary, but also very cool.

3. My kitty is sleeping on my lap, and she's snoring. Hee.

1. New budget cuts announced at work. My raise, promised now for 7 months, is in jeopardy.

2. Wrote to previous company boss, told him I was unhappy.

3. Got a job offer in Columbus, which, coincidentally, is where my super hot new bf is moving.

4. Came up with a smart way to pretend to be cutting budgets but not really that the VP really likes. Now I am stuck. Considering the OH job, but don't even know if the new bf would want me to follow him or think I am scary. Also, who would trade NY for OH? But I could have an apartment for like $5.50 a month.... SWIRLING BRAINS!!!

He's going to mock me for this for the rest of my damn life

1. I just (just, as in this minute) got my grades. WOOOOOO, ME! Time to do the booty-shake dance.

2. Just returned from a giant yard sale at my mom's retirement community, where I managed to drop $20 on books, a nice piece of of the pottery I collect (fifty cents!), and some odds & ends. My mother scoffed when I spent $3 on some dishes she donated to the yard sale. Yes, but I want them. I cannot pass up good design.

3. For fifty cents, I picked up a VHS copy of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar starring Charlton Heston as Marc Antony. Looking over his filmography, I suspect this may have been the start of Heston's reign as king of the male-nipple epics!

1. Got the bills paid, the car tag renewed, and the fridge filled with foodz. All by 11 AM!
2. I have a purplish spot developing on my right temple that isn't a bruise and which I fear is a sign of incipient liver failure or something. No jaundice, though, so that's good.
3. I am drinking a delicious Dr. Pepper and eating a chicken salad sandwich. I think I could live off of chicken salad sandwiches.

1. The refrigerator came. It had a big dent on the side that couldn't be hidden by cabinets or walls. I had them put it back on the truck and arrange delivery for a replacement. This means I won't have a refrigerator until Wednesday.

1a. Living without a refrigerator really sucks.

2. That turtle is so cute.

3. Occhi's book suggestion is in my shopping cart.

Wow, mgl and occhi: I'm looking at the Amazon reviews page for Real Boys, and anything that can stir up such intensity pro and con has got to be interesting.

1) I had a wonderful time in Chicago last weekend, and have been so busy since I got back that how good it was is just now sinking in.

2) I'm looking forward to stopping at the library on the way home from work.

3) My friend's biopsy results are in and she's all right!

Bonus 4) From where I sit at work I can see across the salt flats. They're dazzling white and deceptively icy-looking.

2. totally open weekend alternatingly awesome and daunting, I think I can catch up on some things
3. started in on taming the lawn and feeling good about that.

Melismata, I went through a sort of fogtime after the breakup of my long term relationship a few years ago and I had that same feeling "this is just dredging up some things that I probably should have been dealing with already." Best of luck finding something that helps you.

I'm going to look into taking anti-anxiety or depression meds for the first time, because I don't want to be feeling this way anymore.

1. Broke down and took a half Lorzepram ( a whole 0.25 grams) the other day because anxiety over Daughter's college next year. This one was triggered by me transferring funds from her college acct to checking, to pay tuition and the money taking 5 days to switch, after it left the college account, and me waking up and night and worrying that the money had vanished. It finally got there but I am been anxious at every step of the way, in getting her into college out of state.

2. Working all weekend on the house due to a string of summer visitors. . .it'll be great to have people at our house and people usually have a really good time staying with us.

3. Still waiting on my tax rebate which is going, the same day for a MacBook for above-mentioned Daughter.

occhi, the book looks interesting as hell. I hadn't heard of it before. I don't know, the past couple of days have been weird enough where I'm considering (long pause, sigh) an askme question! Yes! It's that bad! Perhaps I will check this book out first though. Argh. Kids. Do not have them. It's easier.
posted by mygothlaundry 30 May | 21:39
tangerine, OMG those negative reviews are ridiculous. The book is controversial only if you think that showing love and support to boys is "feminizing them." Which, I understand, many people do believe, but dude. That's fucked up. And having worked with boys all year, with my general theory being that giving them love and support would help them, and having actual numbers to back up that the boys I worked with got better grades, got into fewer disciplinary problems, and made more friends after having a woman in their life show them that they were interesting people worthy of love and support, I and my empirical data say "Nyah nyah nyah" to those people. Cuz I'm feminized like that.

mgl, hang in there :-(

1. Worked 9.5 hours w/out a lunch break today, 'cause job had to had to had to be done. Then went to pub and drank whiskey hoping I could find a ride home. (I did. There's no taxi service here, let alone transit. Hah! Luckily my friend goes by my house.) I is sore and tired.

2. Moving tomorrow. More sore and tired, plus I have to go back to the job to pull tape and clean up. Somewhere in there. Good thing I ordered an extra 10 hours in the day for tomorrow.

3. In my dream house, there will be no textured ceilings. There especially will be no textured ceilings with highly contrasting beams dividing them into sections like it's actually a Tudor house or something equally laughable. 4 hours slingin' tape and plastic isn't my idea of a good time.
