I think my iPod's about to go belly up on me. Are there any preventative measures I can take? [More:] I think I must have put some questionable files on there recently, because shortly after it started freezing a lot. I deleted those files but the situation remains the same. Presently, when it locks up I can restart after trying a few times, but I kind of have the feeling that eventually it's going to go down for good or something.

Short of backing everything up and reformatting, is there anything non-destructive I can do to make it stop being a butthead right now?
I've had the same experience on mine, really only noticed it since I installed Nike+ last summer. If I use it frequently, it freezes and needs a reboot about once every week to ten days. FWIW, yours may not be dying. To be safe, definitely make sure you've got backups, of course, but I don't know of anything you can do short of reverting to its factory state and re-syncing with your library.

Is it a hard disk one? The hard disks have a tendency to fail, and there's not a lot you can do apart from being very gentle with it.

Is it a hard disk one?

Yeah, it is. I've had one give out on me already. Hopefully all this one needs is a reformat, which is no big deal. I have everything on it backed up.

Do the reformat then. If it's still dying, take heart in that about any gamer store has used ones really cheap. That is how I got my latest one (after a theft).
