Police nab man with explosives at nuke plant .. Not just any Nuke plant, the one around the corner from my house which I can see on a clear day. So pardon me if I can't sleep tonight.
Uhm, yeah now I'm feeling a bit silly, every time they spoke on the radio they kept saying "reactor one" and that is Barsebäck talk (to anyone near it anyway), but it's about Oscarshamn which is much further away. And this is about Oscarshamn's nuke plant. I thought first that the only English language source I found had it wrong.

I guess exhale then?

Nah. Still gonna be jittery.

I'm closer than that to the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, where Reactor #1 just got a major overhaul (good, who wants to live near an old, worn-out nuke plant?). I have lots of hills between here and there and I'm right next to the main evacuation route.

I've been aware of the Plant for as long as I've wanted to live in this area (which is since before it opened) and I'm glad that PG&E has always been under enough pressure from No-Nukers to take very good care of it (not to mention keeping its security high). And living "almost next door" for 2 years hasn't changed my opinion on the whole nuke thing - which is complex and I won't go into here except to say it's NOT that great an alternative to greenhouse-gas-burning electricity sources, sorry.

Aye, I know what you mean. My mom worked for SKI (the states Nuclear Powerplant Inspection posse or whatever) mid nineties, and she was doling money out to fix plants from Poland to Litauen. Then they took a closer look at the ones in Sweden, and mom helped make the decision that four reactors in Sweden needed to close for repairs asap. She was wigged out for weeks, having been under the assumption that ours were much safer than the run-down examples that were in Poland at the time. (She also voted against the plants so it was a bittersweet win for her to say "see, told ya" but at the same time "aaargh danger danger!")

A lot of land up north has been drowned to make damns and get electricity that way, and we've done quite enough of that too. I'm into windturbines in the sea, but we need to change our electric use before we could switch all support to alternatives. Sweden has sold electricity to other countries for centuries, but now we're buying. That's just moving the problem to coalburning factories or whatnot in, say Poland. And that don't help much, when Chernobyl had the accident, radioactivity blew across Sweden and we had to mass-slaughter most reindeer up north. :(
Pretty freaky news still, two people arrested

aiii! Still scary, dabs. There's talk of building a nuclear power plant in Greece, which scares me to death. Honestly, you do not want Greeks running a nuclear facility. A lot of the attitude stuff that makes living here a great thing in some ways is exactly the outlook you DON'T OHGODNONO want for something like this.
