When was the first time you saw your parents as human? [More:]From MetaFilter. I came across this post on MetaFilter and it really got me thinking. I can't link to the post (cause I'm still computer illiterate) yet, but I'll chime in...

I was a teenager, and my mom was back on the dating scene after a long-term relationship ended. I've always thought my mom was beautiful, but I discovered she was a "person" when she would ask me for help with her makeup before a date. I never knew before then that she had insecurities with her appearance, just like me. I thought it was kind of neat, putting on her eye makeup for her, because I was more bold with colors. It was a bonding that I am very fond of.

My father, on the other hand, became just a person to me at a very early age. But not under good circumstances, so I'll leave it at that.
This was the post that caught my eye.

My parents were always very very human, at least as far as I remember. I do remember the day I realized I could out-run my dad, though. :)

I remember being late elementary school and figuring out some computer program that my Dad couldn't figure out. And I was so excited, Dad, Dad, I figured it out. And then I realized, wow, there are things I can do that my parents can't do- granted, there weren't many more for a long time, but it was the first glimpse of it.

It was when I caught my father trying to talk like Yoda... (yes, I know, cross-site in-joke, bad wendell)

My dad was superhuman. Seriously. When my oldest brother was learning Calculus, he was talking flipping Simpson's rule off the top of his head at the effing dinner table. Holy crap.

I knew he was human when he was moving his folks into a condo not far from his home. He couldn't deal with his mom and was quickly losing his temper, so I sent him out to go buy a hammer to hang pictures, which was a lame but effective excuse to just get him the hell out of the condo to cool off.

I can't remember thinking my parents were anything else. They had a good relationship, the two of them, but their were never saints. The loved each other in spite of (or maybe because of) their faults, which were many.

They set a good example even when they were being bad.

I love my parents but never had any illusions that they were anything but human.

when I was about 10 my mum didn't get a job she applied for, and she spent the next day in my parents' room crying, and my dad explained that she was upset. I had thought being upset was something only children did.

with my dad, it was when I realised that he cries when he goes to the opera :)
