Monday night sidewalk party [More:]We came home around 8:30 from drinking beer at a happy-hour party at my wife's office tonight and all our neighbors were out on the sidewalk two doors down drinking beer and wine. So then we ended up drinking wine for two hours with the neighbors. They do this every couple of weeks without warning, there'll be a street party with a 10 to 15 people drinking wine and eating cheese until 11 or so. Most of these folks are at least twenty years older than we are and can drink way more than we can (which isn't really saying much).

We lived in a townhouse condo in the suburbs for six years and didn't know any of our neighbors and within a month of moving to the city, we had met everyone on our block. City life is great but I need to be up by 6:30 tomorrow.
Suburbs, to me, seem so deadening. The city forces you to interact with others in a way that makes you a part of the human race, rather than trying to escape it or elevate above it. I love cities!

Where are you?

octothorpe, I love it! That sounds like so much fun. I want wine and beer and cheese on the sidewalk!

Suburban life isn't all that bad. I'm tight with the garbage man. I know my neighbors. I'm even actually friendly with some. Once every three months or so the city brings out every emergency and city vehicle and circles our neighborhood in a parade with their sirens on. We all run out and wave and appreciate!

Recently, the neighbor on one side of us shot herself in the leg while she was cleaning her gun. Our other neighbor called 911 on ducks. We have impromptu gatherings. People hop our fence all the time for a Popsicle. And it seems my doorbell is always ringing.
