AUUUUUGH!!! The world is trying to drive me crazy. [More:] After the lock incident the other night, I came home to find a bill for the lock taped to our door, which led to a shit-screamer fight on the stairs between pips, my landlady and her son, with me vainly trying to keep things calm (and with words like 'eviction,' being thrown around). Now today, our landlady is on a tear about us using water again, when Pips did some dishes, saying 'What are you, a hotel?!' I do not fucking need this grief. But it looks like we're going to have to move. I don't ask for all that much, but a place to live and peace in my own home, I'd like.
Sorry dear :-(

A bill for the lock? That is crazy.

She actually threatened to call the police on our water usage. Can you imagine? "Yes, officer, I'm afraid it's true. The dishdrain is full." It's nothing short of insanity. I tried to reassure her, honestly, that I was just catching up on some dishes. Now I have a few left soaking that I'm afraid to do. We just want to live in peace, truly. At this point, I'm looking forward to moving. (We just have to make sure there's no onsite octogenerian at our new place before we take it, not to disparage all octogenerians, cause my mom's in her nineties, and she's a sweetheart.)

Dare I take a shower later? She might send S.W.A.T.

(poor honeypie... someday we'll own our own little sanctuary, where no one can threaten to throw us out if we don't pay their repair bills or we do a few dishes)

I'm picturing your landlady watching the water meter all day and cursing. My gosh. Life is too short.

I wonder how expensive it would be to get water on your own meter in the same place? Could be less expensive than moving, and a lot less stressful - but I have no idea.

Yrrr you two!

One of the fishwife landladies (a whole pack of horrible sisters; my pet name for this one was Mrs. Hankey...though this was before I found out the South Park creature was a sympathetic character)in the dingbat place in LA used to shriek that she would evict me for the way I walked...almost always when I was taking out the trash.

Oh man! You're giving up the awesome Porch??

I'd have to leave, too. That kind of crap in my own home would drive me insane. Good luck in the new home search, y'all...

Is it that easy to find a new place? Sucks to lose the porch just when it's porch weather. Crazy landlords are the suck but even if she tried to evict you, it could just mean up to 90 days rent free. Look up your tenants rights and figure out your advantages while you look around.

Seconding what ethylene said above, jon and Pips. If you're thinking of leaving because you're sick of it, that's one thing. If you're thinking of leaving because you think you have to, feel free to email me if you have questions. As you might remember from that night that I played some friendly pool with you, I do this shit for a living and am always happy to help my NYC brethren try to hold on to their apartments.

Well, Lassie, we're going to leave because we're sick of it, but knowing our legal options (esp. when it comes to notice and to buy time and to get a new place, etc) would be to our advantage.

Check your email, jon.

Lassie coming through with the hookup! Good girl, Lassie. Way to pull Timmy out from underneath that train.

Lassie, you're in NYC real estate, too? Which brokerage do you work for? Or are you in building management?

And www.housingnyc.org (the website for the Rent Guidelines Board) should have all your tenants' rights info, with laws and codes and stuff. Does she own the entire building? And it has a commercial storefront at the bottom, right?

I can see how my comment might lead to that conclusion, but actually I'm an attorney working for a legal services organization that provides free representation for disabled, low-income tenants, parents, and people seeking to maintain or obtain government benefits in Brooklyn.

I'm sorry, jon & Pips. Renting sucks hard, especially with a crazy, shouty landlord. Maybe if all the renters here threw in together, we could afford to buy something ;)

Sorry to hear about that.

In my 15+ years as a renter, it's been my experience that crazy landlords outnumber the sane ones at least 10:1. The other 10% are rational and superficially friendly, but probably want to flip the property and/or convert it condos as soon as possible.

Years of living like this take their toll.
