What are your bed habits? [More:]

Do you sleep with multiple pillows? One pillow? No pillow?

Do you like your feet under the covers or out?

Do you have a favorite sleep position, or does anything go?

Do you sleep with a TV on, or other noise? How about a fan?

Do you have trouble falling asleep.

I sleep on my side. One pillow under my head. It doesn't matter if feet are in or out of the covers. I guess it depends on my mood, or what the temperature is. I like to sleep on my back and stomach as well and switch a lot during the night. When I am sleeping on my side. I like to cradle my feet. I need darkness and complete quiet. Natural sounds like crickets and frogs don't bother me. TV, radio, or people talking does. I don't have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, thankfully.

How about you?
Belly sleeper here, feet tucked in. Prefer silence.

Of course, this is an opposites attract situation, and the man sleeps on the back, feet out, wants TV.

I must wear socks. Cannot sleep without socks. And I need all my sleeping things (my bears and my eye pillow) within arms reach, preferably sitting around around my shoulders. I prefer to have my big down comforter tucked around me from head to toe. I need some white noise humming- complete silence freaks me out.

Oh, and charmingly, I have my mouth guard in and my diet soda within reach. TEH SEXAH!

Two pillows, feet out (depending on how cold the room is), on my side, no noise or lights please. Sleep mask is a must, and earplugs are never far away. Falling asleep is easy; staying asleep, less so.

I sleep with four pillows. one on each side, and two side-by-side for my head (cos I roll around a lot). I switch from one side to other, on belly, on back. rinse and repeat all night. I have a very high metabolism so I rarely get cold (except middle of winter) and mostly sleep over the covers.

I am a belly sleeper, unless I have the awesome snuggle partner, but that is a rare thing and really shouldn't be considered in my case. I mean really, who'd want to snuggle with the eekmonster? THey MUST be deranged!!!

Feet under the covers definitely.

Mostly I have my head under the pillow unless see above.

Quietness I love, and an open window.

I rarely have trouble falling asleep. This is because if I don't fall asleep hitting the bed, I tell myself stories that include myself. Those stories are soooo boring, and have been told over and over again, that they bore me to sleep.

Oh, and when I'm on nights, I sleep with earplugs in.

Cool room, lots of warm cozy covers. Although I normally don't feel the cold during the day at night my body temperature always seems to plunge. Even in the hottest days of summer I need something over me. Drafts and breezes wake me up. Two pillows. I find they flatten out rather quickly, so I buy a cheapo, solidly firm one for the bottom one and a more expensive plushy one for the top.

A short night gown (I make them myself, in cotton for summer and flannel for winter.) I'm the opposite of TPS - hate to wear socks to bed and only do it in the dead of winter on those nights when I just can't get my feet warm. Even then I'll wait an hour for my feet to warm up before I give in and get up to get a pair of wool socks.

On my night table I keep books, my poor abused clock radio, pens, my journal and notebooks, and a lamp. And, just at present, the remote, though the TV is only in my room until I decorate the living room.

As long as it's relatively quiet around me I can sleep. I sleep VERY soundly and HATE to be woken up like you can't believe, because it feels like I'm being dragged backwards through a key hole. I meet the sound of my clock radio with a stream of profanity every morning.

I don't usually have too much difficulty getting to sleep. I have a lot of strange dreams and nightmares though.

I sleep either on my side, or on my stomach. I use one or no pillows. Pretty much any sound keeps me from falling asleep, but I'm hard to wake up once I'm actually asleep. I used to sleep with ear plugs in, but my husband doesn't like that (he gets weirded out that I can't hear him talking to me, even though that's the whole point of the ear plugs!), so now we sleep with a box fan on. I don't mind sleeping in silence, but I live in the middle of Los Angeles, so silence isn't likely to happen.

I sleep with one pillow, one of them fancy contour memory foam pillows. Adore it. Feet, it depends. I like them out if I'm just a little bit too warm, otherwise in (or else I'm totally uncovered). Anything goes, position-wise (eeybita eeybita). I sleep back, side and stomach, though back and side are most common. As to noise, when I was young and stupid, I used to only sleep with very good movies playing at very low volume, hoping that good writing would infect me subconsciously while I slept. Nowadays it's silence or fan noise. Trouble falling asleep? Almost never. I've actually taken naps in bathroom stalls before, it's so easy for me.

Sleep on my back usually, with a very flat pillow. Noise doesn't bother me which is good since our house is right on the sidewalk and our bedroom is in the front. The neighborhood is pretty quiet but there's some foot and car traffic and there's a train line half a block away. Light bothers me though, I can't sleep during the day and all the lights need to be off at night. I can usually fall asleep quickly in five to ten minutes unless I've had caffeine after 5PM that day.

I never ever wake up during the night, sleep for me is continuous until the alarm wakes me.

Sleep comes fitfully - they vary the injection schedule.

Sometimes we just pretend to sleep - the ones who've been here longest can fake it. One guy went for three days and then had to be restrained when he was found out.

Mostly, though, I tend to sleep standing up. I used to lie there and take it like the rest of them, but sometimes they switch the orderlies and we could go for days without being checked on.

Plus, when you stand up all the time, it freaks 'em out.

Sue me - one day I'll get the stipend I was promised, see some daylight again, and look back on the long, strange trip it's been.

One, or no, pillow and on my tummy. Can't sleep on my back because of apnea. I like a cool dark quiet room. I have no problem going to sleep, just staying that way for any length of time. Research says that means an early death for me.
posted by arse_hat 16 May | 23:24
On my back or slightly tilted to one side, with two pillows kinda staggered so as to reach a bit under my shoulders, maybe hugging another one across my midsection, under down comforter, room as cold as possible, feet out if I'm still feeling hot. If I'm really tired, I'm also likely to pass out on my stomach with a pillow underneath. Also I don't like my arms to touch my body while sleeping.

Always, always on my back. Except now that I'm pregnant, I can't and learning to sleep on my side is just awful. Sleeping on my back is soothing to me and if I can't get to sleep after waking in the middle of the night, I'm miserable for hours.

I like a cool room, don't care whether there's noise around or not, and go through earplug/sleep mask phases. At the moment I'm not using either, but it changes every few months. Feet out, arms and shoulders above covers.
posted by gaspode 17 May | 00:10
Side sleeper, feet on the opposite corner (aka His Side). Only one pillow, but it has to be firm. Under the blankets, I need to feel their weight on me. And darkness. Need, need, need darkness. So much so that I require an eye mask to sleep, but it makes me happy. Unless I yank it off in my sleep and have to go hunting for it at 2.30am like last night.

Tons of pillows and blankets , in T-shirt and sweats, feet under blankets, on my back or side, but I need something against my back if I'm on my side and dark, warm and quiet-- the only place I can get a semblance of this is the master closet. I have a white noise machine but it doesn't help much since I'm on the corner of two major NYC streets AND two blocks away from a fire station. I want my other to spoon me.

Gaspode, I can't find the post where you told us that mr. g liked to sleep on top of you (pips had mentioned some animal at the zoo who did this), but would sleeping back to back work for you?

Ideally? On a high, high balcony with snow drifting down, under a fur... Aurora Borealis and stars like flickering points of white fire overhead, a gently dozing samoyed by my side.

But if not that, I just sleep on my back and snore, or turn over on my side and drool.

On my belly, starfish if alone, cuddling starfish when not. Boyfriend hates it when I go to bed before him as I starfish over the whole bed and he has to push me over. I have to have something out of the covers (leg or shoulders) otherwise I cocoon in a ball of sweat and wake up cranky.

I only like natural fibres in my bed so one feather pillow, down duvet, and silk sheets (we took an empty suitcase last time we went to Hong Kong and filled it with silk sheet sets for around £20 - they're starting to get crappy and pilled now so thinking about another trip!). Extra pillow for when I want to read.

I rarely have trouble getting to sleep - a few drops of lavender oil in the bed and zzzzzz...

Thanks for sharing, people. I loved reading!

I remember that about gaspode's husband. It's sweet and funny.

Reading these is fun. :)

Under covers always, one pillow - a pretty boingy one, but not too firm, tshirt, darkness - as dark as possible. I prefer silence, but we live right next to a train track in a multi unit building, so fan white noise is a must. No TV - it keeps me awake.

Oh - side or tummy or starfishy sleeper. Drives her crazy b/c I'm also the heat seeker and she's almost always hot. Winter time I'm iceblock feet. And I don't know why she complains - she gets a whole foot's width to herself. LOLOLOLOL oh yeah, like goo, and extra pillow for reading.

One pillow, must be the feather kind or it's too firm. Usually in a fetal position on my left side. Generally no problems with falling asleep, but it depends whether my fiance is sleeping or tossing/turning. I prefer it to be DARK and QUIET in the room but I'll still fall asleep eventually if it's not. I have to have *something* over me even in hot weather. I almost never sleep naked, whether alone or with a partner.

Mostly on my side. Socks on, of it's cold, but they have to be LOOSE socks. A t-shirt, also if it's cold but nothing on the bottom. One pillow. I have started to sleep on my back a little.

Need ventilation of some kind. Don't care if it's dark or light. Wife needs silence and dark. No TV in the room. Just the dog on her bed at the foot of ours, but the cats banished.

I just got up, so this question is particularly apropos right now.

I sleep every which way: sometimes back, side, front, sprawled, curled, depending. Usually, but not always, under the covers. Sweats, socks, if it's cold; cami and little shorts if it's hot. I used to sleep naked in the heat, but that was before I had a dog who sometimes needs to go out into the shared courtyard in the middle of the night.

Just got a new pillow. I'm trying out the kind with a head indentation. The jury is still out.

All my senses need to be available, so I won't use earplugs, a mask, or any sounds at all (though I'll tolerate a fan if I have to). And I'm very sensitive to light cues: no thick blinds or I won't get up.

My feet must be freeeee! No covers no socks. And my legs can't touch. Gotta tuck a pillow there.

Aw, Pode. Pregnancy sleeping is the worst, but it will be over soon. (Then you'll get all nice and comfy in bed only to be awakened by a screaming Podelette.)

I'm a tummy sleeper, right cheek on pillow, left knee raised, sort of hugging the pillow, sort of propped up (three or four pillows against the wall). I have this small, soft pillow that's perfect for hugging. I like to be under the covers (a comforter, no top sheet), with the room cool. Just a t-shirt and undies, even in winter. Sometimes when I roll over, I'll flip my right leg outside the covers for awhile, knee bent. Several times a night, I wrestle Jon for the covers; he tends to pull them with him when he rolls over, wraps himself up mummy-style. For awhile we had two comforters, one for him and one for me, which we may have to go back to, alas, but I'd miss touching feet, legs. I do like the murmur of the TV in the background (David Letterman) as I fall asleep, and I seem to have converted Jon to this; it is soothing. I do have this purple hippo handpuppet, with a pouch and corresponding baby hippo, that Jon bought me when I was in the hospital that I sleep with; it's made of a soft terry, and I tuck it under my chin when I'm falling asleep. I've always had something to hold like that while I slept.

(Yes, brujita, the Komodo dragons... there was an exhibit at the Cincinnati Zoo -- the larger male would just straddle and walk over the female and plop himself down on top of her; she'd struggle to lift herself, her tongue flicking, while he seemed quite content. Not sexual or anything, just resting.)

Usually on my side (left or right) with one or two pillows. Dark & quiet preferred. Feet to be found under the covers if it’s cold; out if it’s hot. I seldom find it difficult to sleep.

Pillows?
One.

Do you like your feet under the covers or out?
Depends. The feet are the radiators of the soul. If it's warm I leave them out.

Do you have a favorite sleep position, or does anything go?
I sleep on my back until I start to snore and Mrs. Doohickie pokes me. Then I roll over on my side.

Do you sleep with a TV on, or other noise? How about a fan?
Just the thump-thump of the stereos of the cars that pass by. We don't even have a TV in the bedroom.

Do you have trouble falling asleep.
Sometimes, but not usually.

On my side, two pillows (one under my head, cuddling the other one), bottom leg straight, top leg bent. Cool room, as few blankets as possible, feet in or out depending on temperature.*

I like it dark at night, but don't have a problem napping during the day.

When it's hot we have a fan running. I prefer to have the radio on (really low volume) but it bothers the mister.

The mister falls asleep easily (usually 30 seconds to two minutes and he's out), I don't.

*Quite often I'll have one of the cats in the space between my legs (shut up) and one will be half on my side and half on the pillow I'm cuddling. I have been known to have three cats sleeping on me. I have to take the mister's word for it tho', because I sleep through it.

I sleep either on my side with one pillow or on my back with no pillow but my eye pillow on top.
My feet can't be covered by socks or blankets.
I always need blankets even in the summer- a sheet won't do it- I like the weight.

I can't have any music or tv noise, which was a huge problem in my last relationship- he needed music to fall asleep and I couldn't fall asleep with it. There was no good compromise because I would get up to turn it off when he was asleep but then he would wake up and not be able to fall back asleep.

I sleep with a humidifier on for a lot of the year. My room seems to be dry and I hate waking up with sharp boogers.

The bunny sleeps by my feet in the corner of the bed facing out like a guard. I keep my books and magazines under the blankets so he doesn't eat them. That always causes some fun when I have an unexpected visitor!
"Ooh baby... OWWWW what is that???"
"Uh, it's the new Peter Carey novel and US Weekly"

Wow, i must be the only person that sleeps like a mad woman. I usually just plop down on the bed in whatever position i happen to find myself in, and by the time i wake up, i'm perpendicular to the position i started out in, one arm across Mr. Ramix's ass/face/ the other usually dangling over the side of the bed. Or sometimes one foot in his face...poor guy!

When I was reading this last night as my pills were kicking in, I thought it said 'what are your bad habits'. Heh.

As far as sleeping is concerned, I take my diphen, put on some chapstick, take off my glasses, check my alarms, and curl up on my right side, with a pillow between my knees, one under my head, and a stuffed bunny. Feet are usually uncovered, except in the winter. Blanket gets completely tucked around otherwise.

Sleep on my side, one pillow (I used to use two, but I started realizing that doing so was correlating to waking up with cricks in my neck), legs pulled up in fetal position if it's cool, scissored if it's warm. Feet must be out of the covers unless it's really cold. Hands must be curled up near my head, with one hand under the pillow.

I tend to sleep on my back if I'm just napping, though.

I prefer to have the window cracked open, even when I was in the dead of Boston winters. I need steady white noise, like a fan; intermittent noise will wake me up, and if it's too quiet I hear every noise (like the sheets shifting and bed creaking and myself breathing) too loudly as if they're echoing in my head and I can't fall asleep.

Artificial lights in the room or house will bother me; I once woke up in the middle of the night because a roommate had left on the kitchen light -- the kitchen was on the other side of the apartment, on the other side of my closed door, and there was no way the light could have been interfering with my sleep, but knowing it was on was making me insane. Artificial lights outside (street lights, other people's lights) don't bother me. I need natural light to wake up -- waking up in the morning in a dark room will keep me disoriented all day -- and I have a hard time sleeping during the day.

When I was in grade school and we had three cats in the house, I would sleep every night with one cat curled up between my legs, one cat curled up against my side, and one cat flopped against the top of my head on my pillow.

That is so cute. I let my dog sleep with me. I don't know what the dog experts would think of this. I think they would say this was bad. She sits by my head for a minute or two. We exchange affections. Then she sleeps by my feet. It's a nice arrangement.

Kaylee sleeps with us, too. She starts down at the foot of the bed but at some point in the night scoots her way up between us.

Two adults, two to three cats and one dog take up a lot of room on a queen sized bed. If we had a bigger bedroom, we'd get a bigger bed.
