One of those "how have I never heard of this guy before" moments. On a recent episode of The Best Show on WFMU the show's topic was "hottest hot streaks/coldest cold streaks". The first caller suggested that the hottest hot streak of all time might belong to [More:] Billy Childish. And I was all like, "Huh, if this guy's so hot, how have I never heard of him before?"

Some quick internet research: wow, dude's put out over 100 records in various bands and solo incarnations. Novels, books of poetry, paintings, art movements. He keeps busy!

So I grabbed the first disc of this retrospective and gave it a spin all the way through this morning. And you know what? It's pretty stellar! And it's super weird that this guy's never been remotely near my radar before this.

Has that ever happened to you? Stumbled across something legendary or semi-legendary that you can't believe you hadn't happened upon earlier?
Wow, on reread, that came off really I'M SO KNOWLEDGABLE-y, which was not what I meant at all.

Marley Marl.

(I like Billy Childish, but some of his projects are definitely stronger than others. Native American Sampler is relatively available, and very good.)
