I definitely would have included the funeral scene from "The Big Chill". Other omissions?

Nice discussion of the helicopter montage from Goodfellas -- a great, evocative scene in a movie full of 'em.

"Lust For Life" is classic rock? WTF?

"Perfect Day" is older and was the best use of music in that movie, IMO, though that's not exactly "classic rock" either.

Rushmore wins, out of that list. I'd suggest the prom scene in The Virgin Suicides as one that was left out. (There were several songs in that... ELO's "Strange Magic" is the one that jumps out)

Other than the Petty, the Doors / Apocalypse Now association is the only one that's strong for me. But I haven't seen a bunch of the films on that list, so I may just be missing the sensory input.

Not cinematic, but I was actually just thinking about how Van Halen's "Jump" makes me think of dolphin shows. The Chicago Aquarium used to use it as the finale for its dolphin shows, with much jumping and beating of fins and tails and bopping of inflated beach balls, and I can't hear that song without imagining dolphins jumping joyously. Ikkyu2 at some point was trying to describe the genre of "butt rock" to me, and we ended up agreeing that his sense of "butt rock" overlapped completely with my sense of "dolphin-jumping music."

Oh, yeah - definitely "Apocalypse Now". Butt Music LOL.

The Apocalypse Now hits the nail on the head, but I was also real glad to see Rushmore's use of a Quick One, which might be my personal fave.

What about "In Dreams" in Blue Velvet? ELO's "Showdown" in Kingpin"? "Stuck in the Middle" in Resivoir Dogs?

Also, BTW, Scorsese looks simultaneously dorky and hot in that pic on the front page. I didn't know who he was when I saw it.

I just realized why this list COMPLETELY fails: the scene in Shaun Of The Dead when they're beating down the zombie in the pub with pool cues, to the tune of Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now." I remember the first time I saw it my mouth was hanging open, it was just so PERFECT.

I can't find the scene on YouTube, just a gazillion shitty fan videos and remixes and the like, but if you've ever seen the movie you know what I mean. That was smart moviemaking that really kind of made the second half of that movie work.

I refuse. I refuse to click through somebody's banner-flashin' bullshit for eleven pages to see if "Sister Christian" in Boogie Nights is included. I'd rather not know.

Here's the list (of the films, anyway):

# 11. Fear And Loathing...
# 10. Trainspotting
# 9. Apocalypse Now
# 8. School of Rock
# 7. Rushmore
# 6. Almost Famous
# 5. The Silence of the Lambs
# 4. Wayne's World
# 3. Full Metal Jacket
# 2. Buffalo '66
# 1. GoodFellas

I didn't think about ads! I have adblocker, so I tend to forget.

I love Boogie Nights, though.

Oh god yes, I watched Shaun of the dead again the other night and love the Queen-killing-zombie scene.
Here's a totally different combination of Queen and a stick

I think of Forest Gump. Remember when Jenny was on the ledge and "Freebird" was playing?

Also, there is another movie that I'm thinking of but can't remember the name. It is a dumb movie, excellent soundtrack, made in the last ten years. If I'm remembering correctly there is a blue Camero.

American Girl was the first song played by the band at the reception for the wedding I attended last night.

And re. boringpostcards' mention of The Virgin Suicides, I've always thought that the makeout scene set to Crazy On You by Heart was pretty perfect.

No Dazed & Confused?
posted by jonmc 11 May | 08:21
Oh snap, damn good point re. Dazed.

Dazed and Confused was my first thought as well. Any number of tunes, but particularly the intro with Sweet Emotion and Skynyrd's Tuesday's Gone.

Also, Fast Times at Ridgemont High - Uh, maybe I'm biased, but the Phoebe Cates scene with The Cars scene (they're classic rock in my book), maybe that intro as well (can't find it).

that pic of Martin Scorsese made me smile ear to ear! It's funny, but I'm so fond of his work, both as a filmmaker and a historian/preservationist, and persona, and so are everyone I've ever heard speaking about him, that like them, I think of him as Marty. :)

Dick Dale's "Miserlou" in the opening of Pulp Fiction (maybe not "classic rock").

The Big Chill has two good ones: the opening montage of Alex's body (played by Kevin Costner) getting prepared and the characters' reactions to hearing about his death to "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" and the funeral scene with "You Can't Always Get What You Want." The opening has excellent characterization and foreshadowing. (I was a senior in high school when the movie came out and thought the situations in the movie were things that "grownups" or "old people" went through, so it was pretty depressing to realized a couple of years ago that I was older than all the actors were when they made the movie.)
