Have you ever had a personal trainer? [More:]I will have my first session with a personal trainer on Monday.

I exercise and I think I know a fair amount about exercise, but I would like to exercise more, and more effectively. I think a trainer can give me that push and motivation I need.

On a completely unrelated note I found a beautiful shell while I was walking on the beach today. I kind of feel bad that I brought it home. It's a rare thing to find this kind of shell on our beach. I haven't seen one in a long time. It was like finding an intact sand dollar or a gold coin.

Ok, back to the trainer. Have you had one? Mine is a six-foot tall woman with short blonde spiked hair. I'm hoping she'll kick my ass into shape and tell me to stop the insanity like Susan Pewter did.
Trainers are great for learning proper form and figuring out just how your muscle groups are supposed to work, so you can eventually teach yourself new exercise and learn to monitor your own movement. I've had them on and off over the years - first for just learning how to get in shape, and since then for refining my moves / learning new tricks / helping me push through a plateau. If you find the right person, and they don't break the bank, it's eminently worthwhile.

Thanks, mykescipark. I decided it's a worthwhile investment. What price health and fitness? I've been wanting to do it for a while.

Actually, Mr. V did personal training for a while. He enjoyed it, but the gym he was working at really did nothing to push personal training, and would only pay him per client. So it was a losing situation for him and he gave it up. I remember him setting up goals, workout regimes, etc. for each person. He could have gone out on his own, but most gyms made it quite difficult. He couldn't go to a client's gym because they only wanted people to use their own staff. And we certainly didn't have the room to set up a gym in our house. It was a shame; he really did enjoy it.

Good for you!
One of my (massage) clients is a personal trainer, and I've started to see her. She is awesome - a tiny, petite, little thing, with amazing muscle tone!
She is my motivation, I'd avoid going to gym except when I have an appointment with her, and she emails me to remind me when I've missed a few weeks.
The real beauty is that she ensures I'm doing everything properly, and she mixes things up. No 2 sessions are the same, she is always adding new exercises or new techniques. Just when I think I'm *almost* getting good at something, she bloody well makes it HARDER. I had plodding along on cardio machines or just repetitively doing weights counting repetitions, or whatever, she makes it fun, she counts while I concentrate on my form, and she distracts me from getting bored. Sometimes we go a local gym, other times we go to a local park.
So, much fun! Enjoy!
