I'm kind of surprised to report that
this album of Scarlett Johansson covering Tom Waits does not suck.
→[More:] It does not come off as a celebrity vanity project as one might suspect it would. Her voice is very plain and they don't do anything to make it seem otherwise. She doesn't sound like Nico (other than having a low range), but there's a similar unadorned, take-it-for-what-it-is quality. I think I read someone describe it as "working well with what she's got".
Anyway, the production's pretty clever. It's an unexpectedly decent listen, although I don't think it's going to be anyone's favorite record of the year or anything.
