I'm kind of surprised to report that this album of Scarlett Johansson covering Tom Waits does not suck. [More:] It does not come off as a celebrity vanity project as one might suspect it would. Her voice is very plain and they don't do anything to make it seem otherwise. She doesn't sound like Nico (other than having a low range), but there's a similar unadorned, take-it-for-what-it-is quality. I think I read someone describe it as "working well with what she's got".

Anyway, the production's pretty clever. It's an unexpectedly decent listen, although I don't think it's going to be anyone's favorite record of the year or anything.
I heard a track from it the other day and thought it was awful. MeFi's Flashboy describes it thus. I'm avoiding it like the plague.

I haven't heard it, don't have much interest in it. I think--given the description here--it's the very definition of celebrity vanity project: her voice is very plain and just take it for what it is: a nonmusician who can pay someone to record her music and distribute it because she's famous and pretty. It's great that she didn't (ala Paris Hilton) let them run her through every effect possible to make it more interesting, but that makes it no less novelty and vanity, in my opinion.

Oh that's finally out, eh? Will check it out. Covering Waits is so profoundly odd.

That Scarlett Johansson track sounds like Mercury Rev covering Rocket Man while heavily sedated and unable to remember exactly how it goes. (From TheDonF's link to Flashboys twitter)

At first I thought, "how awful." Then I tried to imagine what that would really sound like, and I've gotta admit -- if it really DOES sound that way, I want to hear it very, very badly.
