What is the most important invention or innovation that has happened during your life time?
Definitely the George Foreman grill!

I use it at least three times a week: just hurl chops, burgers, steak whatever in there and even if you're a complete moron whose incompetence can burn water, you get pretty decent food out the other end, cooked evenly on both sides, in a totally predictable time.

Frankly, no other invention of the last thirty-five years even comes close.

OK, the Internet's pretty handy too

The internet. Hands down, no contest. It is my most used thing, other than my laptop, which is the internet-delivery mechanism.

When they started selling Guinness Draught in CANS, I knew I was living in the future.

The ipod: (most recently)10,000 cd jukeboxes can fit into something the size of a deck of cards.

It's hard to tell. I would say the Internet, except it was invented years before I was born. Maybe the MP3?

ESP Helmets.

(wait, we were keeping that a secret from pinky, right? shit..)

It's not super important to me as I don't use it much, but most important culturally IMO, is cellular-phones/wireless-technology-generally.

Most important, personally...my penis.

danostuporstar, did you invent yours, or innovate yours? Or did someone else? What the heck kind of crazy answer is that?

Yeah, it's pee cees + internet.

I don't know how I learned anything in school without them. Although I don't know, they may make for lazy students, I have no way of knowing.

When was air conditioning invented? When did they start using it in cars? I don't believe in sainthood, but for that person or persons, I'll make an exception.

And another vote for the internet. I wouldn't be where I am without it.

* ATMs/bank cards

(Stealing other people's ideas.)
Internet.
Over the counter ibuprophen (it's amazing that women did not burn down the FDA for making motrin prescription only for all those years).

octothorpe has a good one with bank cards. The pre-swipey world seems far away in a very good way. I guess I just didn't have much money or money of my own before ATMs, although they were certainly invented in my lifetime, but I remember having to GO to the ATM for cash to spend on day to day stuff and activities.

Internets and the lovely iPod. I was so anti-iPod for the longest time, but goddamn if it isn't brillant for my long trips.
posted by sperose 28 April | 13:57
Before ATMs you had to either rush to the bank during your lunch hour to get cash (since banks were only open 9-4) or cash a check at the supermarket.

With ATMs, though, you don't get to flirt with cute bank tellers.

Okay, well then...Cable television; MTV (at least when it used to play music); DVD's; cell phones; GPS!

Yes, Metachat and the Internet and Amazon.com.

And probably some life-prolonging drugs, like Plavix, and life-saving methods and awareness.
