I'm drinking Aperol and watching M*A*S*H. I blame/credit that show for my drinking. They made getting schnockered look like so much fun. They were right. Also, Aperol is really tasty in a very weird way.
You're better off than the people for whom M*A*S*H made war look like so much fun. And, yes, it was supposed to do the opposite, but you can never totally control the message others get from your work...
Is it anything like Cinzano? Or maybe it was Campari... I just remember being about 19 when my brother convinced me try one of his favorite aperitifs. It made my mouth draw into a big pucker, like chewing bitter lemon pith.
I never thought that, Wendell. There was plenty of suffering on M*A*S*H* - people dying or having breakdowns, the tedium, danger and overwork of military life, everyone missing their families, the awful living conditions. And everyone just wanted to go home. The whole point of the show was that the characters cut up in order to make their lives bearable. But I guess some people never did get that. My father maintains that it makes war look like a big joke.
The classic drink made with Aperol is the Venetian spritz. You can make a spritz with Aperol (bitter), Campari (bitterer) or Cynar (bitterEST!)
We went to Venice, consumed many spritzes, came home and checked every major liquor store in our area for Aperol, but there was no local distributor. Finally, we resorted to buying it online from an Italian vendor and having the "olive oil" shipped to us. Two bottles of pure orange goodness.
