28 April 2008

A Toronto moment When I stepped on the subway this morning I found I was three feet from Toronto Mayor David Miller. I had heard he lived out my way and that he took the subway to work every morning. [More:]He was wearing a suit with a Toronto skyline pin on the lapel, was very punctilious about saying "excuse me" and "sorry" whenever he bumped into anyone, and was deep in quiet-toned conversation with another man in a suit — something about Etobicoke. I looked around to see if anyone else recognized him, and on that crowded train I saw no sign at all that anyone had. They all had "meh, it’s Monday, shoot me now" looks. No one else even glanced at him. I should really look up the correct way to address one’s mayor in case I should see him again... is it Mr. Mayor or will Mr. Miller do? Or is there some other form of address? Anyway, my uppermost thought in all of this was, only in Toronto... I bet the mayor of New York doesn't take public transit to work.
You'd be partly right.

The Mayor of London does.

Bloomberg occasionally takes the subway to work.

Not as often as his PR office would like for you to believe, but yes, the mayor of NYC does, in fact, take the subway.

I almost literally ran into Pittsburgh's previous mayor a few times when we were both out jogging along the rivers. I just said "hi" and kept running. But this is a very small town, you run into locally "famous" people fairly often.

After the Obama rally, I ran into Eugene's mayor and her husband (a former boss/coworker of mine) on the bus. The good thing about a small town is to be on a name basis with the politicians. Also a bad thing about this town.

Mike Dukakis, as governor, took the subway all the time. There's not necessarily much to brag about when one's elected officials take public transportation.

I suppose it says more about the state of the public transit (i.e., reasonably safe and convenient) than it does about the character of the elected official.

Miller is a nice guy, from all reports from my old boss who was buddy buddy with him. Beyond that I know nothing of city politics.

Yeah, the transit commissioner takes the subway every day too and lives in my neighborhood. Ahhh, Giambrone.
