Paging All You Smart People to My AskMe Thread about Therapists If you like and are interested, would you check out my AskMe thread for recommendations of a good therapist?[More:]

Even if you're not in the UK, could you ask your friends, your professors and your therapists how to find a really good one?

By God, I need this problem solved. I won't do myself, my family, my current job or the Big Scary New Job any good unless I am well.
If your need is urgent then I really hope you will get in to see someone who has an appointment available today, not someone with a waiting list.

Thanks, amro. That's a good point, and I should clarify that. If I were in an acute situation I'd go get help right then and there. If I didn't, I'm blessed by people around me who care about me would make sure that would happen.

I'm not in any kind of acute situation, but the advent of this new job and the continued high stress caused by ordinary life make the task of finding the right person (and getting the tools and contacts to be able to do this repeatedly if necessary) is now a time sensitive, urgent task.

I'm willing to get creative and spend money wisely to make this happen.

Where, for instance, do people with a lot of money and power get their therapists?

I suppose mental health professionals and their friends have informal rating and reference processes at work, even if these are unconscious. Is there a sort of private eye that could social-engineer her way into these circles?

BtGoG, see my post in there. I don't know if it's quite what you're looking for, but I think it will help with the process of finding a therapist.

When I think of rich, famous and powerful Britons who find themselves in need of help, I think of The Priory, and it turns out there is a Priory clinic in Glasgow which offers therapy. I didn't see from my quick glance at the website whether or not this can be on an outpatient basis, but it's probably worth a call to the clinic to see. If they don't offer outpatient services or it turns out for whatever other reason that you don't end up using them, you could perhaps ask them if they can recommend any therapists in the area. It may be a good place to start anyway.

As someone said in the other thread, I think that choosing a therapist that you feel comfortable with and can work with is a very personal and therefore subjective thing. Just because they have waiting lists or come highly recommended may not make them the right person for you. I say this as someone who has been through LOTS of therapy and therapists. Anyway, good luck. I'll speak to my friend who is a counselor and see if she has any ideas.
