How did you find MetaChat? [More:]

I suspect that there will be an awful lot of MetaFilter-related explanations (like mine), but I'm wondering if anyone has a different story.
A bit sore after the surgery and all, but doing fine - thanks for asking.

Oh?

Hmm, I really don't remember how I found TheChat - probably through TheFilter.

I know it was from Metafilter, and I think it was during that time when it suffered from Periodic, Daily Outages, just as the West Coast was drinking their morning coffee.

I think through AskMe. . .I was looking for a place to chat, having gone through a bunch of them over the years, and having no place to land. . .

It must've been through the 'Filter, but damned if I can't remember exactly what brought me here. I do recall it was nigh upon two years ago that I finally got the nerve to join and post instead of just lurking. Alas, I still just lurk everywhere else. Even in meatspace.

I came here to stalk a certain MeFite I'd met named Specklet, who mentioned this site frequently...

I came o'er when it was created, after realizing that I was poisoning myself by wallowing in MetaTalk drama and flamewars. It was so much nicer and more fun over here, and after awhile I stopped going back to that other place altogether. (I peek in from time to time now, mainly in AskMe.)

I used to be a fairly active poster on a cheese discussion forum. Long story short: one typo later, here I am.

I think I first heard about it from some swap thing and semi-joined, and then more recently Shane told me to get my ass in gear and start really hanging out here more (he said it much more nicely).

I found it swell, thanks for asking.

Through metatalk. Someone asked for a place to chatfilter, and people mentioned mecha. Right now I read mecha much more than *.metafilter.

I was in a truck stop just outside of Killeen, Texas, one hot summer night in 2005, and I wuz lookin' for a little rest & relaxation, if you know what I mean . But all the fillies in the diner was either gettin' to know some other fella or they was just not my type. I hung around the joint for awhile, drinkin' that mud that the menu called coffee, and shore enough, pretty soon I had to go use the little boys' room. And there, scrawled on the wall plain as day in letters six inches high, was this message:

"For a good time, type www.metachat.org."

Well, golly, I thought, this could be just what I been lookin' for. I went out to my cab, typed in the URL, and it was love at first sight. It's been almost three years, and never once did I think that I made a mistake. Wish I could fine that thoughtful gent who wrote that on the bathroom wall.

Uh, that was me. The women's was out of order and I really had to go.

jonmc invited me here when he saw I wasn't having a good time over there.

Through MetaTalk. When the "Everyone Needs a Hug" note came out on MetaTalk, I mentioned that my mom had recently died and I most certainly did need a hug. Someone (I don't remember who, horrors!) MeMailed me and recommended this place.

The IT person set it as my 'home' page on my browser and I don't know how to change it.

Took a left at MetaFilter. Directions by Amberglow.

I think it was when someone on Metafilter said "eponysterical", and someone else said "what's eponysterical?", and someone else said "oh that's some lame thing the lamey lamers at Metachat made up", so I googled metachat and thought "hey, that site has some amusing links" and joined up.

It seems like ancient history, but it was only 3 years ago. Weird.

me3dia actually told me how/why he came to metachat at a non-meta-related meet-up, so i decided to wander over and see what all the commotion was about.

But seriously? Years ago, Zack_Replica introduced me to MeFi, and I lurked there for a while, thus reading the thread about the creation of MetaChat. Started lurking here and loved it. Then we went to a local meetup and porpoise (among others) convinced me I simply had to join both. In fact, we toyed with the idea of dedicated_lurker as my username, as when I told someone my relationship to MeFi they thought I was giving my handle.

A man appeared on a flaming pie and said, "You shall go to Metachat". And so I did.

From the genesis, through the blue. The Blue is wonderful, but too exhausting to maintain or defend status as a contributor. Also, I had belonged to some MSN groups, that I still tryyyy to visit, but this is so much better.

I remember having the same blue anxiety at first, here, probably lurked for a week or two or so. Then dipped toesies in. Humourous scared tosies. Now, gah. What a different story.

omg, dame's ass. I would have so bought those panties, but they didn't come in my size, according to the charts. About an inch shy, on the wideness factor. Go Dame.
posted by rainbaby 23 April | 19:25
I don't think I realized before now that MetaChat was started due to MeFi downtime rather than the restricted topics of conversation.

Stumbled upon MetaFilter (still have no idea how). Then someone mentioned MetaChat and I clicked on it. Fell in love with the people here, and here I am. After my e-mails, this is the first place I visit. And, often, the only one.
posted by redvixen 23 April | 19:44
Amberglow and jonmc said I simply must come to Metachat when I visited New York last year.

I think when I finally ponied up my 5 bucks I was a little pee shy on posting, having been a lurker for a long spell. Then I saw some cryptic reference to MetaChat and wandered over to check it out. Then I signed up and just kind of awkwardly announced myself in some random thread. And it's been that way ever since.
posted by SassHat 23 April | 23:04
I started lurking here right from the get-go. I think it took a month or two for me to post something. If we had user numbers, mine would be one hundred and something.
posted by gaspode 23 April | 23:24
There used to be user numbers. Mine was 333. I remember it because my lucky number is 222, and that just seemed weird.
posted by mudpuppie 23 April | 23:34
There still are user numbers, but they can only be seen by members of the Inner Circle.

I found out about it through ikkyu2. And I found out about ikkyu2 through Metafilter. :-)
posted by occhiblu 23 April | 23:52
Damn it dg, shut up about the the u no.

This thread has also reminded me that we need to get Amberglow back here. I have invited him back a couple of times to no avail...
posted by arse_hat 23 April | 23:59
sorry, #343, forgot mtyself for a moment there.

Yeah, I spoke with Amberglow via e-mail a couple of weeks ago and he said he was busy with work and other stuff.
posted by dg 24 April | 00:11
Too busy for MetaChat? How dare he!
posted by elizard 24 April | 11:01
or maybe two hundred and something.

And yeah, I know we still have user numbers. I meant visible ones! I like that we don't

When George died and I posted on AskMe someone suggested I came over here. After I got back from his funeral in Ohio I stuck my head round the door and stayed. Now even the restraining order can't keep me away.
