Switching gears. What do you consider the best most amazing love song? →[More:]Pardon me while I retch from typing that...
Seriously though, looking for alternative (read: not trite) "love" songs.
Do You Realize by the Flaming Lips.
Wouldn't It Be Nice by the Beach Boys.
In My Life by the Beatles.
Funny Little Frog by Belle and Sebastian, if it all works out eventually.
Some would call these trite, I guess. But they're wrong.
If we’re talking love songs as love songs, I’d have to go with "God Only Knows" and This Is Love (which I have posted here before).
On the other hand, there’s a Robyn Hitchcock song called “Airscape”; while the lyrics are about a beach on the Isle of Wight, the sound of the recording really captures the feeling of being in love. For me, anyway. And yes, I am a freak. I know it.
On preview: seconding "Northern Sky" and "You Are The Eeverything".
"Let's Stay Together" -- Al Green
"You Look Like Rain" -- Morphine
"A Pair of Brown Eyes" -- The Pogues
"From Your Boy" -- The Queers
"I Can't Stop Loving You" -- Ray Charles
"I'm a Fool To Want You" -- Frank Sinatra
"I Wanna Be Your Dog" -- The Stooges
Wow, back in the hubby's Navy days, we sent each other mix tapes. These are the ones I can remember:
"You're The One" - Orleans
"Best Friend" - Queen
"You're In My Heart" - Rod Stewart
"Let's Take The Long Way Around The World" - Ronnie Milsap
"I'd Have To Be Crazy" - Willie Nelson
Then there's the covers we did in the "recording studios" in the Mall - how 90's, eh?
"Could I Have This Dance" - Anne Murray
"I'm Gonna Love You Forever" - Randy Travis
John Hiatt's "Have a Little Faith in Me" was our wedding song. If I could do it again, not that I don't still love the sentiment and piano/froggy voice arrangement of that, I might go with "I Can Hear Music" by the Ronettes.
Richard Thompson's "Read About Love" (from the album Rumor and Sigh) is a wonderfully wry take on the subject... and not at all what you are asking about - but worth a listen anyway.
Though 'I want you' does lean a little into stalker territory.
For something a little bit more out there, AC/DC's 'Let Me Put My Love Into You' is always worth a listen. How anyone sings "Let me cut your cake with my knife", without pissing themselves laughing is still a beyond my comprehension.
