20 April 2008

Soupy Sunday I knew I wasn't going to get much accomplished today, but I decided at the very least I needed to use up some of the tasty produce I had to make some soup.[More:]

Since I've yet to make the same pot twice, here's what was in my delicious soup today:

- Beans (chick peas, split green peas, black peas, brown lentils)

Once the beans were done cooking in the crock pot (two hours on high), I added:

- handful of brown rice
- five cloves of garlic
- bay leaves
- veggie stock
- some sundried tomatoes (to replace the missing can of diced tomatoes I thought I had but couldn't find)

Then I let those simmer down for a while, then tossed in:

- a few cups of sauteed red peppers, onions, jalapeno, mushrooms
- one medium zucchini, diced

Served up with some salt and pepper, bread and butter, it was quite delicious.

i need to make myself eat something more substantial than rainbow cupcakes.

You sound like a past mistress of soup, Sassy!

Yesterday, I made "Tom Yum Jew" --

I started with an envelope of kosher vegetable soup mix, added lemongrass, lime juice, basil, ginger, and a little kosher Worcestershire sauce (I'm not Jewish, nor kosher; I do like kosher vegetable soups and don't know why I have the Worcestershire sauce!) I also threw in some fresh sorrel from the garden.

It was actually a pretty good fusion experiment!

I have a cold [ :( ] and I'm making lentil soup for dinner [ :) ].

Made some veggie stock from onions, carrots, celery, garlic. In a while, I'll bring it to a boil, add the lentils, cook for ~10 - 15 minutes, add some barley. When the barley is close to done, I'll add some onions, carrots, turnips.

Makes being sick almost worth it.

I'm making Pasta e Fagioli right now...

Last week we got two *whole* chickens at the farmers' market, so I made stock with the roast carcass & the rest of the yummy bits, and a number of bits I would not normally consider yummy.
Tonight I sauteed some mirepoix, then added a mason jar worth of stock (ooh... so much gelatin!) and simmered for a while.. and then buzzed in the blender for that nice thick texture.. Meanwhile I simmered some nice heirloom cranberry beans 'till mostly soft, then added them and the pot liquor to the soup.. pitch in the end of the box of Orrichete pasta, and wait....

Not a soupy Sunday, but we are planning on making iconomy's very orgasmic black bean soup later this week. (We blend in an avocado as well.)

We had pulled pork sandwichs. 8 hours of slow smoking over an Apple wood fire. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Yup, Rancho Gordo Cranberry Cargamento. I still haven't gotten the hang of the dried beans yet - presoaked the first batch too long (got a good germination rate!) and so this batch I just simmered for about an hour. Results were a bit uneven, it seemed like every 13th bean was just this side of cooked, while the rest were perfect.

The final soup came out oddly sweet; I think the carrots I used were extraordinarily sugary (from TJ's, who knows what type).
