Sunglass Management 101 What do you do with your shades when you're walking along and get into the subway or a non-sunny stretch of area?[More:]
Is pushing them up on your head more of a girl thing than a guy thing?

Currently employed strategies:
1] Holding them (occasionally cumbersome)
2] Inner coat/jacket pocket (limited to jacket-wearing-occasions)
(do i worry about trivial things too much? :p)

Up on the head. I'm a girl. Guys can do it too. I see no problem with it.

I hook them on the collar of my shirt as well.

The other day I read an AskMe question asking where to store sunglasses in the car, since his built-in sunglasses holder was too small for his current glasses. I love these organized people. Why not just throw them on the passenger seat like I do?

Pushing them up works for women, makes men look kinda like tools, in my opinion. Shirt pocket, if wearing a shirt with a pocket, is a good place.

Whatever you do, DON'T BE THAT GUY WHO FLIPS THEM AROUND AND WEARS THEM ON THE BACK OF YOUR NECK.

I hate that guy.

In the subway or say if I walk into a store, I usually take them off and put them in my glasses case, swapping them for my glasses. If it's a transient non-sunny bit (

Up on the head, like a headband. I think it's only a guy thing if you just kind of push them up on your forehead so they look like another pair of eyes, rather than all the way up into your hair.

The other thing I've only seen men do is put them on backwards, basically, so that it looks like you've got eyes on the back of your head.

Though it also occurs to me that I've only ever seen male bike messengers do either of those things, so maybe it's more a messenger thing than a guy thing.

I only actually take them off my head (into a pocket or neckline) if I'm going to be in the shade for a longer time.

On non-preview: dersins, ha! And jinx.

ooh, what happened there?

If it's a transient non-sunny bit (less than 10 min or so?) I just keep them on. I don't care if I look stupid.

If I'm wearing prescription sunglasses and I go into a building, I change into my normal glasses. If I'm wearing my contacts, I just hook one arm of the sunglasses into the neck of my t-shirt or, if I'm wearing an outer jacket, the opening of that.

I take them off, hold them absentmindedly, put them down and lose them.

Hang 'em off the front of my shirt, usually, though I have been known to push them up onto my head (only if they're the kind without the separate nose pieces that then get tangled in your hair and then your hair wraps right around them and you're standing there in the bright sun, blinded, trying to untangle your hair from the nose pieces of doom up above your head where you can't see a damned thing anyway even if your corneas weren't being slowly turned to ash by the blazing sun until you finally become so exasperated that you yank them off your head, which of course rips off at least one nose piece and renders them unwearable. Those kind I definitely hang them off my shirt.)

dersins, I hate that guy, too.

I push them up into my hair, and for some reason I often think of Gloria Steinem as I do it, except the times when I think of my childhood Malibu Barbie, whose sunglasses were attached by a cord that ran straight through her head, so she could only wear them pushed up. They couldn't be removed.

Sometimes as I push my sunglasses up, I think of Gloria Steinem and Malibu Barbie, which lends a weird frisson to the moment.

Uh, so: push them up.

Oh, and LoriFLA:

I love these organized people. Why not just throw them on the passenger seat like I do?

Because an unorganized person like me comes along and sits on 'em. Sorry about that.

Same as gaspode and jan - if it's only for a very short period I'll leave em on, but if it's for a while I'll swap them for the specs. I've got the sunglass swap pat, I can do the manouevre with one hand, case and all. Bad to do while driving though.

I leave the sunnies on if I'm only going to be in a shop for a minute, too - say to buy a paper. Is it rude to leave them on when being served at a shop? I just assume sunnies indoors are prescription but that pov might not be shared by 20:20 people, and they might actually just think I'm a dick.

If it's for a short while, walking in and out of a store for instance, I wear them like a headband. If I'm going somewhere for a long time, I put them in the sunglass case I carry in my purse.

on foot: up on my head. sometimes I forget they're there. hanging them on a collar or in a shirt pocket tends to get them dropped/scratched/stepped on if I bend over, so I don't do that.

on the bike (and anytime whilst wearing a helmet like on quick stops into the grocery store when I can't be arsed to bother removing it): flip them over and hook them into my helmet vents upside-down. each helmet/sunglass model combo has a slightly different configuration, so sometimes clipping them around the back vents works best. this is a male roadie/messenger/europro trick btw. Often used on long, hot climbs, as Carlos Sastre demonstrates here, to keep sweat from cascading down the insides of the lenses.

the new pair of cyclist-specific sunglasses I won at a race last week are photochromatic (they go from clear to very dark depending on available light), so I haven't had to bother taking them off much unless I'm inside for a long time.

I tuck them into my purse. But if I'm only going to be out of the sunshine a few seconds, I push them up. Or if they're the kind with nose holders and my hair is done in such a way that pushing them up with mess with my hair, I will hold them in my hand.

desrins: I just KNEW, before even clicking, that your link was going to be of that Food Network douchebag.

I put them up on my head like a headband, and because it conveniently keeps my hair out of my face, often forget about them and walk around the office half the day like that.

Head. Not pushing up (messes with THE DO!) but I put them on my head.
posted by dabitch 18 April | 13:06
They usually fall off when I try to put them up on my head, so I hang them off my collar. Then I lean over to put the toilet seat down and they fall in.
posted by rmless2 18 April | 13:30
I put them on my head, or hook them through the neck of my shirt, but in back.
posted by Specklet 18 April | 13:35
If I'm wearing contacts, which is infrequent, I do push them up on my head. In fact, when my hair is longer, I like to imagine that this makes me handsome and rugged. It's also one of the few times I see my forehead. I'm, I think, the only guy who has said that he wears this sunglasses like this (!)

Usually, these days, I do the prescription glasses swap though. They go into a pocket of a coat, or in warmer weather, stay in the car, or get carried around clumsily.

I keep the sunglasses on, I whip out a saxophone and start to play.

Put them on my head. If I am outside, I always have a baseball cap on, for sun protection, so they fit nicely atop the bill. . .

Failing that, in their case in my daypack.

(I just splurged on a pair of Bolles and I am nervous, but got tired of wearing cheap shades.0

I push them up on my head or, if I am wearing a cap, on top of that. I don't care if it looks girly, I hate having to carry things and would just wear them inside if that was the only alternative.
