So, whaddaya hear?→[More:]There's an awful racket of jackhammers here, as they're digging up and repaving the street under my window. What sounds are you hearing right now?
Keyboard tap tap tap, copy machine, general buzz of all the cubes in the cube farm, people next door whose voices I know all too well since they NEVER SHUT UP.
Nothing. A hum of a fridge, the whisper of my computer. Outside, a faraway mutter of traffic.
The loudest noise heard whilst typing this is the sound of me typing and a single click-ummmm of my boiler.
If you'd been at Hain's Point at lunch time, you'd have heard me serenading the MrsMoonPie. Our first date was 6 years ago, and I learned "Here Comes the Sun" for her as a present.
Now, though, all I hear is the gentle hum of the fan under my desk. For being so close to so much cool stuff, my office is boring.
Traffic, traffic, nothing but traffic. Occasionally, it pauses for a brief moment, like a gasp for clear air, as the traffic signal indicates a change in tempo at the singular moment when flow shifts the other way.
Computer fan (it's on my desk, not under it), weekday downtown traffic noise, a prop. airplane, some guys from the city public works department blocking this side street with idling trucks while they do something to the water or sewer lines.
Pandora - currently, the Jam - the fan thing wafting freezing or broiling air through the vent over my head, my computer keys tap tap tapping away their lonely soliloquy of time wasted, life spent and eventual heat death and my boss' computer keys also tapping, although far less poignantly. And the big printer just started into its printing whizz, zoom, whump whump cycle. Oh hey, also, boss just answered her cell phone.
a bad flourescent ballast, HVAC ductwork droning, the north parking lot door going kr-sqeEEeek-tock! behind me, the *beeps* that all the badge keyreaders make on all the various doors on the multiple levels of our RA building, 2 chemists on the mezzanine up above me quietly discussing sample results, random disjointed conversations dopplering along the walkways, my colleague's infectious laugh, keys jingling, high heels tapping, and the peculiar soft, breathy noise the airlock to the QC pures area makes (sssschlck) when someone badges in.
I work in an open 3-story atrium cube farm, with 2 mezzanine "catwalk" levels on one side that lead to all our (access-controlled) QC/RA labs. So it's sort of 5 floors, but sorta not (weird floorplan). I kinda like the constant low-threshold bustle, though. Most of my colleagues are considerate; it's an unwritten, understood rule that you don't use ringtones, holler across the mezzanines, or have loud conversations in the halls of this place due to the echo-y nature of it, but the constant presence of a moderate amount of noise actually makes it easier for me to concentrate than a completely silent area.
The conversation of a couple of people walking past my desk, the hum of the air system, and the bell of the elevator. Oh, and the constant ringing in my right ear, but that's been there since I was about 14 so I don't usually pay it much mind.
The TV in the next room playing some real-estate-porn show pips is watching and the Replacements' 'Left Of The Dial,' blaring from my speakers and Bugles crunching in my mouth.
