"Looking back on the experience now , with a peculiarly melancholic kind of bewilderment, he recognizes that he walked onto an elevator one night, with his life in one kind of shape, and emerged from it with his life in another."
What an interesting story! On the other hand, what a weird framing device. There's a guy trapped in an elevator, quit telling me about the history of elevators, WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN TO HIM??? I had to skim ahead to see how it turned out, now I'll go back and read the rest of it.
Wow, cool story! I didn't mind the way it was structured, because I got lost in the technical details and almost forgot that it was about a specific person.
I like how in that one shitty time-travel romantic dramedy starring Hugh Jackman as an oldtimey rich scientist guy and Meg Ryan as Look At Me I'm Meg Ryan Hey Wait This Is Sleepless In Seattle Right Where Am I Oh God, there was a tiny little sliver of elevator business/science subplot to it and that that was basically the most charming and entertaining part of the whole movie and there was only thirty seven seconds of it but the point is that the butler's name was "Otis" and that was a nice touch.
