Early birthday present! I had a lovely day yesterday.[More:]
My 40th birthday is coming up soon, and I've been alternately ambivalent, accepting and welcoming of it. I have a few friends of the same age, including one of my best friends from high school, and we are all commiserating with each other.

I've been having some computer problems, so this friend offered to take a look at my laptop. After cleaning and determining that it needed more memory, he bought and installed it, insisting that it was his birthday gift to me. Then when we got back to his place, unbeknownst to me, his wife was ready to teach me how to make some Vietnamese dishes (I had mentioned to my friend a few months ago that I was interested in learning). After the cooking lesson, she presented me with a "kit" containing everything I needed to make the rolls, etc. at home.

I feel blessed to have caring friends.
Well, what great friends! And very cool things they did for you.

(Don't sweat turning 40... it's just a number!)

40 is great. That's when I got sober. Life has been constantly improving since.

I think this just shows that you have spent your last 40 years relatively well. Pat yourself on the back; you're the type of person who is both kind and fortunate enough to have made amazing friends. And having met you, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

I doubt if you were a jerk you would have such giving friends. Often, our friends act as a mirror, reflecting the best qualities in ourselves right back at us. Think about that when you look in the mirror, and smile at yourself with the kind of smile you give your friends and acquaintances. You've earned it! Don't worry about 40. Forty years have sculpted you into a wonderful human being who makes other people's days brighter. And the best part is, you're not done growing as a person yet.

Here's to 40 more and then some. =)
