puppy update: the first 24 hours. [More:]

Branco (our ward for the next couple of weeks) is so sweet, and so very, very, very quiet! He hardly utters a peep, even when playing! Except when he's being Mr. Guard Dog, a position he seems to take pretty seriously.

If someone walks by our door, he's all about the low-growling 'til they are well and safely past. If someone comes in the door, that's it, gloves are off... but he will calm down immediately once you assure him that the offender is a friend of the house.

He likes to lay all around the house. Favorite spots so far are either of the Flokati rugs by the bed; under the bed; under the table in the bedroom; on the couch; on a special blanket sort of thingy we made up for him in the living room; on the terrace. He doesn't try to get on the bed. So far, the only chewing episodes we've had are 1) he really loves my crocs, but so far no damage done, and 2) one plant; loss of one branch.

When he came to visit the other day and I took my crocs off without putting them away, he took one of them and put it in the center of the rug on one side of the bed, and took the other one and put it in the center of the rug on the other side of the bed. Funny little dog. :)

He was a little upset after his mistress (our friend) left and spent about a half-hour rushing back to the front door at any noise, to see if she'd returned, but he didn't cry, and didn't seem to continue to be downcast after the first hour or so.

He's so good! He comes when you call him, stops when you tell him to stop, doesn't climb up on things/wreak destruction (so far! he hasn't been left alone yet!). he likes to play sometimes, but doesn't get wild crazy or demand attention. He poops and pees quite a lot! We've gone with the inevitable, and let him do that on our small back terrace (terrazzo; he has a balcony at his regular house where these transactions take place), so I'm swabbing that down multiple times a day.

The only concern so far is one of the cats who lives upstairs has breached security, and last night I found him (the cat) at the door to the terrace, looking in and making those moaning, angry cat sounds, with Branco inside looking at him with puzzlement. I worry, because this cat and his brother can be very aggressive, and they're just about as big as Branco, who has no experience with catkind. We had tried to cut off our terrace from the courtyard below to keep the cats from coming around, but our efforts were apparently puny. Must scale up cat protection barrier.

We'll take our first walk outside in a little while.
Here's the one shot I just managed to get before my camera batteries died:

He's so dark it's almost impossible to get any kind of good face shot, but I'll try again later with fresh batteries.

Oh, hey--super taz! You sound like a pro:)

PS. This is coming from a guy who just accidentally locked his cat in his cupboard and realized his mistake after about half an hour. The cat's fine, thank god. Didn't even make a peep. She goes through this phase every once in a month when she likes to be alone and goes and hides in all sorts of places.

On Preview: That is one cute dog!

He's totally muppy!

His mom is a Bichon Frise, btw; father "unknown". :) He is pretty much exactly like this description of a Bichon temperament, though.

Cute! And boy is the phrase "puppy update" fun to say. Especially if you say it all serious and Cronkitey.

His mom is a Bichon Frise

I was going to say, he looks like a black version of my dog, with longer hair.

Keep updating us!

We had a walk! A short jaunt of only about six blocks, round trip, to the neighborhood grocery, for our first outing. He's an angel! I had him on a leash of course, but he was perfect, staying right with me, stopping when I stopped, going forward when I did, and he was totally getting it when I swerved or crossed over to the other side of the street, or anything at all - like telepathically. I didn't ever have to pull or use the leash at all. He couldn't have been better! He's a little spooked by sudden loud noises, but then, so am I.

He did great in the store, weaving with me through the teeny aisles with stuff stacked up all around and a number of big peoples' feet to contend with. A lady in the store stopped to pet him and talk to him, and he was lovely. He even did a poopy while we were out, which I totally didn't expect, and saved me one swabbing of the deck. :)

his poops are pretty wet... I don't know what's normal for puppies, or even what's normal for him. I don't know if he's a bit disturbed because of the transition, or if it's typical. I'll ask when I can, but my friend, his owner, is in Cambodia, so I'm not sure when that will be.

Branco is indeed cute. Bichon Frises are lovely animals.

Your story reminds me of something I hadn't thought about for quite some time: dogsitting with Rudy. This is many years ago, when I was living in a house with roommates. A roommate's girlfriend removed a dog from the home of a friend of hers, because the friend's live-in boyfriend was becoming abusive to it, but she could not keep it at her apartment due to lease restrictions. Until she could take it to her mother's house, she left it at our place for a couple of days.

Rudy was a miniature dachshund. He was very quiet—I don't think he made a peep the entire time he stayed with us. He enjoyed the company of humans, but was very undemanding, and was content to be in the room, lying on the floor and keeping an eye on things. His favorite thing was to jump up on the couch, and burrow underneath an afghan. He was small enough that there was no way you'd know a dog was underneath it unless you picked the afghan up or patted it down. The best thing, though, was watching him make his way up the stairs. It was an old house, with a grand staircase, and it was all he could do to get his stubby legs up to the next stair. It was tremendously amusing as he made his way up, one at a time, slowly but surely getting where he needed to go.

Further pupdate: okay, he's really barking when anyone walks by the front door (and only then, otherwise, same as before - wee quiet boy) - and there are two apartments above us, with a total of four people coming in and going out, all passing by our door to do so. Plus guests. Earlier he was just growling, but now he's serious. I guess he's becoming more invested in protecting this spot as "his place". Up 'til this evening he was more tentative; he was growly and didn't like it, but it wasn't that much "his business", I suppose.

I'm realizing that my friend has a top floor apartment, with no other apartments on that floor, so the only people going up to her floor are people coming specifically to her place. SO... this will be a good thing that will get him used to more foot traffic around a place where he lives, and he'll calm down a bit about that - or it will be two weeks of my neighbors getting the big business, barkingwise, as they come and go. eep?

When he came to visit the other day and I took my crocs off without putting them away, he took one of them and put it in the center of the rug on one side of the bed, and took the other one and put it in the center of the rug on the other side of the bed.

My Lab did that once with her toys on the bed when I was home sick one day.

And now... one slipper has shuffled off this mortal coil. Carnage, slaughter.

So kyoot, taz!

My dog used to take one shoe and hide it under the car. We surmised it was because he knew you needed two shoes to go out and it was his way of restricting our movements, but maybe it's another, deeper doggie behaviour.

Ah, little puppy. I wanted to read this yesterday. My puppy is a good guard puppy too. It's so cute, but I could see where it would be annoying if there was constant activity outside our door. Thankfully our pup just barks once or twice when the doorbell rings.

Have fun, taz. He is so cute!
