10 April 2008

WTF? I just checked my bank account online.... ... and apparently the Canadian Government has just given me 1,172.00 bucks.

I thought I OWED taxes this year. My jaw is still on the floor. [More:]

Take the money and run! Woot!

I am posting this for now good reason except for the wtf-ness of it all. And because my 3 point status update now looks like:

Money?

WTF?

I can has a thousand bucks I wasn't expecting?
Erm, apologies for not managed to do "more inside"...

Awesome! There is nothing in the world better than no strings attached sudden windfalls!!

Pay some bills, buy some weed.

Sweet.

Umm... I would really hold on to that money for a little while. The worst thing would be if you went out and spent $1,000, then the Gov't came back and said, "Whoops, we made a mistake. Please be sending us the money back, kthxbye".

Well, I've been stressing about my Visa bill, so I'm going to be very happy to pay that down by a decent amount.

I'm also thinking: real haircut, a summer dress. Ooh, and there are a couple of shows coming up that I can go and see too, instead of thinking, I'd like to see that band, but I have to save my pennies right now...

*jumps up and down*

On preview, muddgirl, that had occured to me, but in the first flush of YAY I'm not going to think about it.

Ooh, thanks for fixing the more inside bit.

It's an excuse for a haircut.
i haven't let anyone else cut my hair for years, so i will join you in salutatory professional snipping.

And I'm buying tickets for Caribou and Fuck Buttons right now!

Instead of the dress, i'm finally getting myself a hard drive, so we can both report back on our spending/paying spree. Take that, Visa!

Just wanting to echo muddgirl on this one. Don't spend it, just hold onto it. For a while. Otherwise, if it's a mistake, when they realize the mistake they will just take the money out of your account without asking or warning you in advance.

ok, i dunno how youse canadians do these things, but round these parts it aint takin no einstein to figure out your tax liability (unless you happen to be rich anyway). how can you 'think' you owed taxes? you don't know? i'd say, if you previously calculated that you owed, and this money showed up without advance notice of an error on your part which would explain it, then you can only be inviting trouble by spending it.

quonsar, I pay somebody to do my taxes. For reasons too dull to go into here, I was doing two years at once. My son was studying overseas last year, so there was a bunch of tuition receipts and deductions and stuff that was applied to my return, but there was also some issue to be resolved concerned my tax bracket and blah blah blah.

I was expecting the worst. My best case scenario was that I didn't owe anything. Getting money back once all the beans were counted is double plus good icing.

I reason pay somebody to do my taxes (even though they are relatively straightforward) is because at my advanced age I've discovered that it's worth every penny to not have to deal with emotionally-charged bits of arithmetic. I don't do numbers very well; I do words.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll leave you to your fish and me to my happy dance. Woot!

well, it would seem to me that if i paid someone to do my taxes, i'd damn well insist they tell me the result prior to sending them off to the gov't. but whatever. i too am awaiting a glorious credit which i've already got spent!
