10 April 2008

Finally at the age of 50, I remembered my high school locker number, 56 to be exact. It was a dream, of course, I don't do the naked in a classroom thing, just unable to find my locker. Then it morphed into dealing with an infestation of pamploos, tiny tribble-like creatures with 8 legs and eyes. Any other notable dreams lately?
This morning I dreamed that I was living some sort of Shakespearean drama, and I knew what was going to happen (I was going to get run through with a sword) but was powerless to stop the inevitable. Was very weird. I liked my velvet gown, though.

My recurring high school dream is losing my schedule. I have that dream at least once a week. I had it last night, and woke up feeling upset that I was going to fail all my classes because I couldn't figure out where they were. High school is going to haunt me for the rest of my life.

In a recurring dream, I always wake up on the morning of a math final, having not been to class the entire semester. It was like I forgot I had math class but now I have to take the final. And, believe me, I am not good enough in math to go in and fake it.

But if you take hadjiboy's example and just look at porn all morning, none of this will happen.

I dreamed last night that Stynx and I were traveling to DC to meet up with my family for some sort of conference, but somehow he got lost on the way. I tried calling him, but his phone just rang and rang (a real life technical issue with his phone that was fixed a few days ago), and I figured he was kidnapped by foreign terrorists. Finally, he made it.

Last night, I dreamed that I was driving a car. Then, suddenly, I discovered that I didn't know which pedal was which. I was trying to brake, but was constantly pressing the clutch instead. Or the gas pedal. I just couldn't stop the car. Then road bent to the left and I went wide off. There were some trees standing there and I managed to stop the car by grasping at one of the trees.

I had a terrible dream last night that my bunny's cage was outside and the wires were warped so there were tons of gaps. He kept slipping out where other animals could eat him and I was worried. Then a cat started stalking him and almost got him, but I threw the cat against a tree and hurt it.

The cat was impressed so I made a deal with him to protect my bunny from other cats in exchange for hay. But I was still worried because everyone knows cats are untrustworthy and I thought he would still eat my bunny even though we had a deal.
I woke up and my bunny was fine and eating my magazine.

Hands down my two most common dreams are:

1) the one danf describes above (the class is different, but that's the EXACT scenario)

2) being lost in high school in between classes and having no clue where my locker is or what classes I'm supposed to be in.

I've been having those dreams on a regular basis for over 20 years. The new one, that's started in the past year or so, involves living in a huge 100+ year old house (as opposed to the modern town house I actually live in), but not being able to find ANYTHING in it, and always feeling disoriented. And occasionally we "suddenly" notice a major flaw in the house, like there's no roof or the floor is collapsing.

Good lord, looking back on those three I see a theme. Ugh, I need help.

I have the exact same dream as danf and Slack-a-gogo, with the added element that I try to explain to the invigilator that I already have said qualification so don't need to do the exam, but they won't listen. I still have the sinking anxiety feeling (in the dream) that I haven't been to class and will fail.
posted by altolinguistic 10 April | 10:48
Oh god, high school anxiety dreams! I have all of them, plus the one where I'm super-late to class and I keep trying to get all my stuff together and get a ride, but no one else is helping me and I'm going to get in so much trouble.

I have a similar dream to the math exam one. Except I'm in University and it's an English Literature class.
There was a deadline when I was at University, you could drop a class and not have any academic penalty, which I did on a few occasions. But in the dream I've forgotten the deadline or missed it somehow, and I haven't read any of the books, and it's all Henry James and Yeats and old John Donne poems and it's the end of the year and I have to take the exam. It's terrifying and it's the only recurring dream I ever have.

Last night's dream: while we were out of town, my younger brother won a motorcycle but didn't know how to drive it so I was driving it home (in reality I don't know how to drive one either) with him riding pillion. We were far from home and had to stop for gas several times. At the last gas station (before I woke up) while we were waiting for the attendant to bring the credit card back out, Harrison Ford struck up a conversation with us. He said he had had one of the same bikes and it was a piece of shit. We said thanks for the info but this one seems to be working fine. After that we chatted about about his movies and how we were big fans of his. Finally the Chevron attendant shows up again. She told my brother we were buying too much gas and cut up his card right in front of us. We were still yelling at her when I woke up.

I'm forty-freaking-one years old and still have a recurring dream about high school. I've been out of school for a while and have to go to lots of classes to make up for my absence. I don't know anything about any of the classes, I forgot to wear pants or a skirt so I have to walk very carefully so my ass doesn't hang out of my long-ish shirt, I can't find my locker, I'm carrying so many books I keep dropping them and bending over to pick them up. Talk about total stress. I usually wake up with a headache when I've had that dream.

I dreamed I went to coldchef's house with my bf. It was extremely weird there (sorry, coldchef) and his mother wanted us to leave. We couldn't leave yet for some reason or another so she gave us a tupperware container full of uncooked rice. The rice was in a huge burlap bag in a cabinet above the stove and when you tilted the bag the rice just poured out. I thought, whoa, that's a bad way to store rice in New Orleans; they'll have bugs in no time. Then one of my least favorite exes walked in the front door and started hugging everyone and I panicked trying to figure out if I should pretend I didn't know him or make all fakey fake nice and happy to see him, at which point I woke up. I really hope this doesn't mean that he's going to resurface in my life soon.

Chalk me up as another one who occasionally has that same high school/college I forgot to ever go to class but now I have to take the exam dream.

I am still slightly (and probably irrationally) pissed at myself that my dream danf refused to hug iconomy in her dream.

Like, why was I so stupid?

I've been having my classic anxiety dream lately. For me, it's always something to do with my teeth. So, in the last week or so, my teeth are loose and falling out, they've grown and are now huge and my mouth won't shut properly. Or something weird and disgusting like that.

My favourite so far, there was something stuck between my teeth, so I pulled it out and it turned into string. And the more I pulled it out, the more huge and tangled it became until there were things tangled in it like nail-brushes and giant bits of plastic. And the dream me kept thinking - "Jebus, how did this get so bad? No wonder I have bad dreams about my teeth".

urgh, teeth dreams - when I had train-track braces as a teenager, I used to dream about a killer dentist who would make a small incision and then leave me to bleed to death. This dream occurred around the times I had my braces tightened (ow ow ow ow).

Strangely, I've never been scared of dentists or orthodontists in real life, so I've no idea what the dream signified.

and and and (thread-hogger alert, sorry) - performance dreams, mainly involving a concert hall that has an incredibly complicated back-stage area, and I have to be on stage but I can't find my instrument. Usually running is involved. Bonus anxiety points if I then have to play an instrument I don't know - I usually find the stage for those dreams, and there's generally something wrong with the instrument, like a broken neck on a double bass.

you guys. I never dream about high school, thank goodness. I did have a dream last night with deborah in it, though. I can't remember anything, except we were having fun, and she helped me out in some way. I should have written it down, because as these things go - it went.

A couple of weeks ago, I had a Metachat related dream. I dreamt that mudpuppie was being interviewed by Brian Lamb about her new book, "Olena, Journey of the America: From Oregonian to the Mr. Rushmore". I had been going through some old threads a couple of days before, so I guess it got added into the mix somehow.

I never dream about high school, thank god. Or anything particularly realistic, in fact; my dreams tend to be pretty surreal. But last summer, when I was training for a triathlon, I would have dreams that I needed to run (not to escape anything, just run for the sake of it). But my feet were so heavy and I could hardly lift my legs and it was so hard. Once I stopped trying to run in real life (I'm happier on a bike), the dreams went away.

The other night one of my twitter followers/followees was in my dream. Never met her IRL, but in the dream we were walking along like old pals. Very random.

Yes. A beautiful woman in an Italian sportscar made me an accessory to an armed robbery. When I tried to break away from her, she tried to run me over in her bright Orange Lambo. Bless her heart, as insane as she was beautiful, she really was in love with me.

I totally have high school dreams, all the time, including the ones mentioned above. I also have frequent dreams about the houses and neighbors next-door to where I grew up. (They are, strangely, in my dreams much more often than our own house.) Had a dream about one of those houses last night. It involved an impossibly large vat of soup, which we eventually had to foist off on a charter bus full of church people.

And kop -- thanks for the book idea!

No problem, or rather it wasn't a problem for my unconscious mind. On waking, I did think that a one-legged Ukrainian woman, who had survived Candide-grade ills and reversals, going on a Kerouac-esque (word? Is now,) journey across America might make a kick-ass novel. Or at least a punch with the artificial leg novel.

I'd buy a copy.

Recently I had a dream (twice) involving walking around topless in a city. I was embarassed, and trying to play it cool. I got very upset when a friend of mine saw me, although she made no mention at all of my indecentness. I was looking for an address, if I remember right.

The most upsetting real dream involved our dog. She had chewed up one of my cookbooks (a favorite), and I went to discipline her. She attacked me! She was actually yelling "DON'T EVER TOUCH ME AGAIN!!!!!!!". I still look at her cautiously.

I only remember about 6 dreams or so. I can remember dreaming, but never what it was about. This one was part two.

The first one was many years ago. No one else in the dream was familiar. We were in the resistance, and we'd been in the resistance for years. This time out, it wasn't anything really important, just basically moving small portable supplies from A to B. We were sticking close to any cover we could find - bushes, cars, low trees, ruins, the like: if they saw you it was death.
It was noon and the sun was out somewhere, but of course it looked like twilight because it was always twilight. Shadows and muted colours, like if you adjust the colour balance on the TV to black and white and turn it up just a bit so everything is only slightly tinted.
Running under the bushes behind a ruined church, I looked up at them, the enemy. Where there should've been the blue sky were amoebas - you know from those films of the little transparent single-celled organisms under microscopes - bigger than clouds, bigger than anything, and covering every square inch of sky, all grey and slowly moving and blocking the sun and causing the twilight. And watching.
And I remember looking up and thinking, "The sky's gone out."

Second, recently. Still the resistance.
In the city ruined, ruined like Dresden or London after the WW2 bombings.
Under a bright blue sky and the sun's been shining too, though it's setting in an hour.
In the buildings, bodies and dust.
We finally find the other half of the team that we were supposed to meet. They're half a block away in the foundation of a building, looking small and distant from here, and dead. The clouds are what we have to worry about. They're cumulonimbus clouds - the ones with the flat, dark bottoms and tall puffy tops - but not the huge ones. These are smaller, a few miles wide. Inside the clouds it looks as though someone's lit a huge fire, and you can see the faint orange/yellow flickering. The bottoms of the clouds are black and red and thick blue lightning bolts stream out of them and strike the rubble of the city again and again and the air smells like ozone. The other half of the group must've got underneath one, and there are a couple of the clouds coming back this way even though the wind isn't blowing in this direction.
If we stay any longer, and we'll be hunted. We leave for shelter, as we're faster than them, and will try again another day.

I know we're not winning.

A couple weeks back I had a dream that someone I work with was following me around trying to beat me up because "[I] needed an enemy."

It was terrifying and I've rarely been happier to wake up.
