Overzealous mods, ahead! On TWOP, I asked the mod of a forum a question. The response? I was banned.[More:]So, a special hand to all the Meta mods, whose moderation is a bit more even-handed.
Man, there is drama going on over at TWOP. Wonder if there's enough for a Metafilter post.... will research.

You got banned for asking a question? What did you ask?
posted by iconomy 09 April | 18:36
I asked the mod of one of the forums if he could pin the weekly episode thread, and possibly open it in advance. I was banned with some snarky message like "Please rethink your priorities".
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 09 April | 18:37
You know what this means? Weekly ANTM threads here on Mecha! :-D
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 09 April | 18:40
Ok that's just weird. I mean that you would get banned for something so silly.

Bring on the ANTM!

Yayayaayay!

Tonight's a recap episode, though. I might not even watch.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 09 April | 18:42
Did you ask in the forum itself, or through email?
posted by mullacc 09 April | 19:27
Yeah, they slapped two-count them, two-warnings on me this week after years of no problems.

They have always been anal over there, but INCREDIBLY so lately, at least on the American Idol forums.

What the hell is TWOP?

That stinks, TPS. I'm sure you were one of their better contributors. My sister mostly lurks over at TWOP. She has told me how strict the moderating can be.

Television Without Pity.
posted by bunnyfire 09 April | 20:18
By the way, TPSH, I really am glad you posted this. I was so sad last night after I got my second warning...especially since I got accused of repetitive behaviour. Which was totally totally inaccurate (long story, boring.)

From that link you posted, I got off very very easy especially since the particular mod was one that was mentioned a LOT there. I did pm him and he didn't exactly rip my head off in the reply.

TelevisionWithoutPity (which SHOULD have TVWP as an acronym, not TWOP) was sold to NBCU's "Bravo Division" last year and the site's founders left en masse about a month ago. This may be a case of New (Clueless) Management.

I posted something objectionable over here on MeCha. A mod kindly deleted it and sent me a "WTF Doohickie?" email. That was so much nicer than banning. The mods here ROCK.

TWP, actually. TWoP, if absolutely necessary.

Did you ask in the forum itself, or through email?

Each forum has a special thread just for asking the moderator questions. It is called ASK A MODERATOR.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 09 April | 21:02
OH MY GOD. You DIDN'T ask a moderator a question in the ASK A MODERATOR thread did you? Well, it's no wonder they banned you, with such flagrant disregard for the obvious rules.

Next thing we know you'll be getting involved in a land war in Asia, or heck, maybe even going in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!

Wendell, they always ran a tight ship over there but now it's really horrible. I was dumbfounded to see (per tpsh's link) that the original gang was gone. I'm not happy about that either.

So where do I go now for good conversation about American Idol? Where? Where? Can't do it here cus essexjan doesn't get the shows till later in the week.
posted by bunnyfire 09 April | 21:11
Yea, I, too, would love an alternate site for TV show discussion.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 09 April | 21:12
The golden years were when they were still mightybigtv. I was a big fan back then. Since the name change, not so much

I was dumbfounded to see (per tpsh's link) that the original gang was gone. I'm not happy about that either.

They just left. It went downhill under their watch. Much of it was their fault. You should be thrilled.

Fuckin' Hell [in the words of Gordon Ramsey]
Who needs the grief from a simple Question, a query...

Way to go Pink. I say you deserve a medal for standing TALL. [you stood up to their shite]
Fuck 'em, it's their kittylitter box and they'll do whatever...who is asking to be dissed for asking¿
Who needs to kowtow to some site or other anyways. Honestly, the lesson you've just been taught, is that power corrupts and MOD power corrupts absolutely, in this case. Maybe plenty cases.
It's true. They define their lives, their domain, their everything they define themselves by their 'position here all'. Yes, sad huh. MeFi mods have other interests outside their domain. They work plumb hard keeping it together on track.

Say you did like the site though [and wanted to contribute constructively, sensitively— judging by your query] and are running into that wall of egotism, then if I may be so bold as to suggest, start your own competing forum vs their fascism [if you've the time]. I pull out the shepherd's lemma [in short, if a McD's open up on one corner, Wendy's opens on the opposite corner, between people choosing either burger joint, it's a 50/50 chance they walk into either]. Your gain/profit.

What you did is brill in my books. Screw the no minds. The unethical and selfish, egotistical ...shall I continue... etc.

Heh-heh, I think Gordon Ramsey is Real and a hella watch. Sure I understand how the teevee wants some to behave/act according to the scriptwriter [and ratings —It's All about the Ratings, Lordy.//], but he knows his shit and it's just bidness, don't trust everything you see, but the recipe's are real.
[speaking as someone who once managed a kitchen in a 'was famous' bar with [new] moron owners, but a great staff [committed, skilled, imaginative musicians and artistic types who were the coolest and on the same page].

Well... looks like I won't be reading TWoP anymore, now that the original founders are gone and the mods are being dicks.

That being said, I'm still keeping my LiveJournal...

The original founders WERE the dicks. It happened under their watch. The site tps linked is from last year.

Am I on candid camera?

Thanks, but the only reason you got an e-mail was that you were too far away to slap ;-)

Exactly. The petty little TV-nazis like Miss Alli have always had the run of the place.
posted by scody 10 April | 00:23
A couple of things.

TPS : You're banned. For talking.
Wendell : You've been through this domain registration thing before. Don't fall off the wagon.

I keed.

Television Without Pity: shouldn't it be TWP?

Anyways, if they can ban TPS for asking a question, then there's probably something wrong there.

I used to love TWoP, but Bravo's constant (and increasingly corporate) redesigns have started to irritate me. I actually hate their most recent one; it's so busy and full of unnecessary little modules. I don't participate on the forums, but it doesn't surprise me to hear that they've started sucking too.

Boooo to Bravo.
posted by unsurprising 10 April | 03:49
Yeah, Bravo is pretty much ruining the place.

Wendell should definitely register that domain.

Hey, has anyone checked out The Onion's AV club discussions?
posted by richat 10 April | 08:44
A week ago, I was logging in here, and noticed that I was not actually logged in, and, moreover, my usual password did not work.

The very day before, I had said something about slapping essexjan around (figuratively of course), and when this login deal happened, I was CERTAIN that I had been banned by one or more of the mods here for misbehaviour.

Then I checked the email I have listed for here (which I do not look at every day) and saw the new PW. I am still wondering about why this happened, and whether I missed some sort of announcement.

Just forwarded it to you. . .I am having a sinking feeling now.

In the light of day it's hard to explain now, but somehow a gif file showing Rick Astley in the goatse hole just seemed post-worthy.

From now on, I'm only posting things I would want my 90-year-old grandmother to see. Promise.
posted by Doohickie 10 April | 19:40
