jon, mixing Willie Nelson-endorsed booze with Frank Zappa-endorsed beer? Your stomach/liver/head is gonna 'splode! Blowed up real good, man!

I certainly hope so, my friend.

jon: It's almost 7 pm here. Might as well join you.

You're gona party in my liver? Tread lightly on my gall bladder, yo.

Dude, I am so matching you shot for shot with my favorite bev, Cruzan Single Barrel rum.

And elizard brought me more than a shot glass.*

Wasn't this an invite? Yeah, I'll try but all bets are off after the 4th shot. And I'm drinking unendoresed moonshine.

Here's an awesome comment that I was just reminded of:

"How do you deal with the anxiety around the economic and global clusterfcuk? ..."

12 to 18 year old single malt Scotch helps me.

I don't mean this flippantly. Every bottle of good Scotch is an optimistic vote for the future of mankind, and a testament to the wisdom of the people that made it, and kept it for us, against the day our cold bones and weakened hearts would most need it.

Nobody lays down good whisky for the future, unless they believe in tomorrow, and in those of us who'll need it, when it's golden ripe and ready. Those what make it often don't get to enjoy it, but probably enjoyed some layed down for them, when they didn't know enough to lay any down, themselves.

So, it comes round, and it goes round, and warms our hearts and loosens our tongues when most we need it. Courage in a bottle, and hope of better days, from those who've gone before.

Scotch is good, I like Scotch. But I am a Bourbon man, first and formost, and Old Whiskey River is a quality bourbon.

And that, goddamit, is why I miss paulsc. Although, in full disclosure, I am working on a negroni right now, not whiskey. So I suppose I support people who plan for the future by laying away little beetles in their cocoons.

Jon - Have you tried about Rye? It has many of the flavorful virtues of Bourbon, without the over-sweet sins, and without the price tag, either. A fifth of Rittenhouse or Old Overholt is under $20, and is fine stuff.

Skol!

q- back off. what's true for you isn't true for everybody.

Bourbon is the most over-rated liquor in the history of drinking. It all tastes like thundering, sugary shit. Scotch is the second-most over-rated. Mossy, dank cloying stuff. The future is rum.

*drinks rum*

I'm just sayin'.

If you love rum, I'll have to assume you like sodomy and the lash, too, my man. Beer and bourbon/sour mash is what I grew up on and while my palate has expanded, it's still my go-to booze.
posted by jonmc 06 April | 22:10
You think bourbon is sugary, but you drink rum? Rum is sugar!

No accounting for taste. I'm with jonmc, nothin' like a nice sippin' whiskey, and bourbon is exactly that.

This is good news, both of yas. Good luck with everything. Two fine folks - it makes good sense. Have fun in 'Bama, e.

Nice to see those crazy Canuckian shotglasses going to good use.

nothin' like a nice sippin' whiskey,

sippin? where'd you learn to drink, a sorority house? wolf that shit! ;>

I just watched you shoot that, and thought the opposite: what a freaking waste.

I learned to drink from Irish guys in bars, who know how to sit with whiskeys from late afternoon until closing time and never sway a mite, and today I sip whiskey because, generally, I drink it while I'm playing in sessions. And I want to be able to start drinking it at 9 PM and still be drinking it at 1 AM, while playing and singing improvisations on traditional music the whole time. If I shot good whiskey that fast, not only would I be kissing goodbye to ten-spots faster than I can handle, but I'd be out of commission by 11:30, playing crap sluggishly and throwing everybody off, and I'd be out on my ass.

Also, good bourbon tastes really good, and I want to be able to savor it. Losing it all in one slug leaves a few seconds' aftertaste, while sipping lets you infuse the flavor into yourself for a long time, mellowing and coloring the whole evening. I've always really hated the whole "shooter" phenomenon. There's no respect for the brewer, for the company, no respect for the booze - just fastest way to get fucked up. It's just a drug hit at that point.

I can dig that, Miko, but overgrown mullethead that I am, Ilearned to drink in parking lots and playgrounds, so I wolf shit.
posted by jonmc 06 April | 23:13
Makes sense.

I just like the taste and want it to last, and also not to pass out before the night's over - pretty much what it comes down to.

Sometimes I'm like that too, miko, sipping awy, but i was on camera, had to keep it real, y'know?;>

I also have aquired a near superhuman tolerance for alcohol (since that video was made, I've had another couple shots and two bud tallboys and finished off that Zappa beer, which is a ctrong ale, and I had 4 schlitzes bfore all that, so...it's all academic, is what I'm saying)
