i feel the urge to cut off a foot of hair.
i'm going to wait to see if it goes away but i'm ready.
It would be kind of drastic and impulsive.
What say ye?
How many feet do you have?

Do it. Hair grows back.

Uh oh
my awesomeness is turned up to 11.
i blame Top Model.

When I first moved here 8 years ago I cut about a foot off my hair and my very Asheville hairdresser told me that it was really good for you to cut your long hair every so often because karma builds up in your hair, you see, and so, like, the ends of your hair have all this leftover karma and stuff from things in your past that are now over but they are still hanging around in your hair. Therefore, lightening your hair load lightens also your karmic burden and allows you to move forward. I am more Asheville myself than I always admit and so I must say this made some kind of hippie sense to me and therefore, I let her chop away and in a couple of hours I had this excellent short magenta hair. Now it has mostly grown back but I have decided that I like long hair and I can cope with my old karma.

So. If you are feeling like you're in a change cycle it's a good way to do a big swell foop out with the old and in with the new kind of thing. On the other hand it may make you cry because, you know, going from long hair to short hair always feels so terribly irrevocable even though it isn't, really.

If you do, you should take many pictures.

Under a yard.
i am short. It is long.
It seems like if i am going to bother, i should go for an entire look, or i'll waste the drama.

It's been longer and been cut far far shorter in more dramatic ways that what i was thinking.
It's different lengths from donations and grow outs.
It's quite a crop. i wish i could sell it to Victorian jewelry makers.
i'd love to do a buddhist shearing but it would be too unconventional for here.

Do it! Chopping off hair is fun!
posted by gaspode 28 March | 15:24
You people want me to do it for your amusement, which is why i should wait for cocktails and hair dye.
posted by ethylene 28 March | 15:25
i don't know if i have the clothes to do shorter, if that makes sense.
Also, if i dye it a fun color, my mother is sure to boycott it, and i do love going to Michael's with her.
posted by ethylene 28 March | 15:31
Yes. It's liberating! You have to do it once in a while!
posted by LoriFLA 28 March | 15:33
Two big hanks in the back are already brushed out and ready to be sent off or used somehow. Maybe i should wash it first.
i washed it yesterday.
You've all pushed it from whim to planning stages.
posted by ethylene 28 March | 15:39
It's kabuki hippie long and really does need to go.

If you cut off a foot, you should donate it.
posted by Specklet 28 March | 15:55
Whould this foot of hair be from atop your head?
posted by MonkeyButter 28 March | 15:56
Coincidentally, I have the urge to cut the hair off my foot.
posted by mrmoonpie 28 March | 15:58
Do it. And show pictures.
i've read the hair donated doesn't do much and they'd rather have money. It's almost more for the people who want to feel like they're doing something, and i've done it before.
It's long enough i have rinsed out the back part i plan to whack right now and after it dries a little, it's off.
i might use it myself to make something. i hate to waste it. It seems like it should be a good cash crop.

i don't think all the hair on my body together makes a foot.
posted by ethylene 28 March | 16:02
Do it! Do it! Do it! *gives ethylene a cocktail*

I think it's important to do every few years, when you're in a change cycle as suggested above.
posted by goo 28 March | 16:06
It's nesting season for the birds. They'd probably appreciate some building material.

When we would brush the cat, we used to leave the hair out on the deck for the birdies. Somewhere out there is a chickadee who smells cat and thinks "Mom?".
posted by bmarkey 28 March | 16:06
Do it. I cut my hair short around the time I turned 30 (fives years ago) and it's progressively gotten shorter and shorter to the point that the sides and back are done with clippers...the top is done with a razor. I cannot imagine ever having long(ish) hair again. My hair is just fine and sucks when it's long(ish) and short cuts just work much better for my hair and for my lifestyle. I detest having to spend large amounts of time on hair. (My hair takes 30 seconds-2 minutes to do.)

The last time I got my hair cut I got down to all naturally colored hair for the first time since I was about 13. More grey shows up every day. I want to see what it looks like in a couple months. Right now it's kind of nice because the greys look like highlights or something.
posted by fluffy battle kitten 28 March | 16:06
Did i mention how this is not a new thing for me? How it upsets other people far more than myself?
i'm inquiring about a booze run (text) but i really can't go short, weird and Easter egg blue like i am wont to do. It grows super fast so anything that needs maintenance is out of the question. i do not spend time on my hair but i do like the option and variety.
As it dries, a little natural curl is coming in that the weight pulls out.
i think i'll keep it an use it in something. It always makes me sad, like a lost pet in the trash, sitting there all pretty in the bin liner, but it must be used right away or it becomes the wad of hair in the corner somewhere. I i take significant whacks off the front, i'll send it off or make it into a weave for my mom or something.

It's loading.
posted by ethylene 28 March | 16:31
Oooh, it is so uneven now i think i have to do some photos of weird make up in bits as i punk it away in chunks.

Me and my newly-nude foot are off to the meetup. There will be cameras, but I doubt there will be any more pictures of my foot. You never know, though...

I used to have sort of a layered shag. I was happy with it but my haircutter moved to Couer d' Alene, and the next haircut I had sucked so I gave it up. . .it's halfway down my back, and I keep WANTING to cut it but very hesitant. . .
posted by danf 28 March | 16:53
i have already. The cost of processing the hair barely covers its worth. The front chunks will only be six inches.
posted by ethylene 28 March | 16:53
It's too late for regrets.
Now i gotta finish.
posted by ethylene 28 March | 16:57
This is now a fait accompli.
i think i need a drink.
Right now.
posted by ethylene 28 March | 17:05
So wait, you already cut it? I was thinking a bob - short like the twenties style - would probably suit your natural curl without much fuss! The greatest do ever if you have the light curl to do it! All you do it "wavy-comb" when wet and ta-dah, you're ready to go (+some mousse if you want hold)
posted by dabitch 28 March | 17:11
So wait, you already cut it?

Indeed.
posted by middleclasstool 28 March | 17:15
Oh, my. I wish I had a foot of hair to cut. But NOOOO, I inherited my mom's hair gene. The "I can see my scalp at 20" gene. The "I'd consider minoxidil even though it makes me suicidally depressed" gene. The "If I win the powerball I'll get hair transplants" gene. (My mom did six months before she died, at age 77. She went out looking great.)

You have my envy and my admiration. If I were still the weird chick I was at 20, I'd ask for a lock of your hair. (I did this as a way of meeting people. Honestly. I have many locks of hair.)
posted by lleachie 28 March | 17:18
Pictures are taking forever to load.
A barely legal teen just ferried me a shot of vodka.
Ok, i should wash and style it. i really need a razor comb. i totally hacked it like a savage.

Ah, apartment network delivery has summoned me a bottle. That's service. i smell a tax free business.

Back after a styling.

It's too thick a foot from my head to curl much.
i'm thinking that if i keep the front a little longer, i can still do a convincing 60s housewife flip.
i feel too lazy too fully shower and i should eat something solid.

Holy moly, you did it! Definitely need to see after photos of you, ethylene.

Mine is halfway down my back as well. I keep waffling about getting it cut. I almost did it last weekend but the wait was too long at the cutters.

i'm gonna let it dry a little but it feels mom length and that bothers me some.

A year ago nearly to the day, i spontaneously quit being a smoker. As suddenly i have resumed.

Ok, while i try to make myself presentable, possibly pink up some urchins blonde damaged hair, i challenge all of you do make a drastic change. It doesn't have to be permanent, but shave something or cut something. Alter your look significantly or dress up, and post a picture.

i had to wipe off most of the make up and shake out my hair.
posted by ethylene 28 March | 19:45
That's still a lot of hair left! Wow! How much hair did you have before?????
posted by ramix 28 March | 19:47
i have a lot of hair. It was chopped at the base of my head already for locks of love so it graduates a bit to the back.
It has to look somewhat conservative for ease. i'll masquerade as a republican until election day, then bust out the color and cut.
It's first lady length.
posted by ethylene 28 March | 19:50
My monitor is a little dark so I can't quite make out how short it is now, but if it's where I think it is it look spretty good.
posted by bmarkey 28 March | 19:51
It's being deleted in an hour.
i need a theme idea. Maybe pink Oscar Jlo or emo hair.
i that Top Model Katarjanayablah's hair in the last photoshoot prompted this hair cutting impetus.
Any more drastic and i'd get hassled somehow.
It was to my waist but i'm short.

Yes, all automatically time coded by the internet live and in person. It needs to be cleaned up, badly. i used big old cloth scissors.
i was going for a grown out rainbaby look, as i can't be arsed to do bangs.
So i have an alibi, it wasn't me who didn't do that thing then with the...

Now i have cartoon red lips and floating ennui.
i am too tired to lace up into anything and the lingering hairspray smell bugs me.
Your turn to amuse me!

Here's the next random five off the top of my itunes.

My god, the tubes are clogged today. Sloooooooooooooooooooooooo.....
In the time it has taken to load, i have done my look twice and washed it all off already.
i need to be paid to spackle myself.

I've been trying to put my finger on what your new 'do reminds me of, and then it hit me - Mrs. Peel. Not that you have that flip, just sort of a Peelian vibe in that one shot where you're sorta looking down your nose at the camera.

On the other hand, I have had that theme song in mind most of today.

Yes! I have a friend with the right kind of hair who asked for a Louise Brook 'do - and it was stunning. But it takes a lot of upkeep in terms of keeping it trimmed and shaped, especially if you have fast-growing hair. I'd do it though, if I could (I shouldn't) - and I hate going to the salon. /me doesn't go to the salon
posted by taz 30 March | 11:09
i don't do the salon either, but i may have to to clean it up. It needs shaping and layers and i don't have the right tools here.
If i do nothing to it, it's republican mom length, just past my shoulders in front, to the delight of my mother, which works just fine for me right now.
As much as i like the look of bangs, they just bug me and i don't want to bother with upkeep. The Louise Brooks works for tall skinny chicks who do a lot of upkeep and i have enough bobs in my past to be happy to not bob again.

The girl who's hair i pinkened apparently had to report to community service the next morning. i want to find out how that went.
