Friday 3-point status update [More:]

1. I left my cellphone at work, plugged into the charger on my desk. I only learned this when my manager emailed me earlier today to let me know, after it 'pinged' with a message for me. He's put it in a drawer for safekeeping until Monday.

2. I just had an awesome workout at the gym - 20 minutes on the treadmill, then an upper body weights workout, and a short swim to unwind. The weights were good, I can still feel my elevated heartbeat (and I have a very slow resting heart rate, around 55 bpm).

3. Soup is cooking on the stove, and I'm making my favourite Mediterranean chicken for dinner.

How's your Friday going?
Oops, the message was from me! I've emailed you what it said.

1. I get to interview a candidate today, my second one this week.

2. I'm sort of pissed that they're trying to sell him on all this exciting work that they "didn't have a budget" for me to do.

3. Girls night in tonight with some friends.

My Friday is the end of a long grinding week:
1. I had to put my beloved elderly cat to sleep; expected, but still no fun.
2. I had to work until after midnight last night and will probably have to work this weekend as well. Much of this overtime involves sitting around doing nothing, which, after a few hours, is almost as tiring as working.
3. This month at work I have been paired with a coworker who, well, let's just say she's not as skilled as she once was, and her work requires extensive but discreet supervision on my part, which is very draining, and frustrating given that she makes more $$ than I do.

I am really looking forward to April and being able to post fun cheery status reports. I have at least been getting my workouts in!

1. I think the cold that's dogged my partner the last couple of days may be trying to get me, as well- throat is a tiny bit scratchy.

2. Having a nothing kinda day at work so I'm about to leave early. (w00t!)

3. We'd planned a day trip up to the mountains for tomorrow, but since it's supposed to rain all weekend we're going to postpone it. Will probably go bowling or to a movie instead.

(on preview: aw, so sorry about your cat, JanetLand. I've been there... it's indeed rough. *hug*)

1. I came today in to find a machine to kill. I wanted to take control of something this week. found one. the server goddess is slightly mollified.

2. I can't find my cellphone, and I'm irritated.

3. I might just be irritated on general principles. I've been in kind of a mood the last few days.

(((janetland))) I hate putting kitties to sleep

1. I love mentoring, but this particular MD is SO MUCH WORK.
2. I have a new laptop bag. It's very pretty.
3. AMPK activation by AICAR or metformin can inhibit tonic GnRH release from immortalized GT1-7 cells. How about that?

(4. Just got a phonecall from midwife saying Q4 bloodtest - for neural tube defects - looks normal. happy!)

1. Various travels for a boy who needs a break:

1a) GOING GOING BACK BACK TO CALI CALI in three days. My best friend is getting married in *Yosemite* and I'm doing a reading! (Beatitudes ftw! Blessed are the meek for they shall totally cash in sometime in the future!) And I'm not flying American-registered carriers, so not only will I not have to deal with $5 booze, but I'll probably get through customs faster since the flight won't have as many Americans on board.

1b) My flight to Warsaw, en route to

1c) A teacher training day on April 12 in Torun, Poland, where I'll be working next year!

2. I have plain yogurt at home! And carrot bread! Om nom nom.

3. They changed the door code on the elctronic door lock last night and guess who had to wake up his housemate at godknowswhen o'clock to get in? Sorry buddy!

(Hugs to JanetLand and gaspode!)

1. Am sad there is no snow.
2. Am happy to be going to see X on Sunday. It's their 31st Anniversary tour.
3. Am now feeling ancient contemplating the 31st anniversay of X.

JanetLand, I'm sorry for your loss.
mdonley, every time I see "ftw", I see it as the old biker tattoo. There's more than a little cognitive dissonance in reading "Beatitudes fuck the world!"

1. Working like crazy so everything is ready for boss next week. Taking mental wanderings on the net while I have frequent breaks waiting for his input/changes, by-the-ways, one-more-things.
2. I got out a duffle bag last night and contemplated packing. Gathered a few toiletries.
3. I’m leaving Sunday for a vacation! Of course, there’s no paid vacation and I’m hourly, so this is big – I’ve not taken time off in 3 years.

Hugs JanetLand, Congrats gaspode

1. Why do I get a sore throat & the sniffles once a month along with my PMS?

2. All I want to do is sleep so I put myself back on fish oil this morning.

3. Book issues: the (out of print) book I've been waiting for from Paperback Swap has not shown up & chances of it appearing are now vanishingly slim. This book is the 1st in a trilogy of which I own the 2nd book, which I started reading and then stopped, since I want to read them in order, which is why I'm holding the 3rd book captive in my cart on Amazon. Now I have the 1st book there too. You know that the minute I make the Amazon order the swap book will appear in my mailbox, which will drive me batshitinsane. At the same time, I've been listening to The Shipping News in the car and it's awesome so I went to the library to actually get the book so I wouldn't have to sit in my car in the driveway for the next 12 hours. They didn't have it. So I got another book which turns out to be, get this, the 2nd in a trilogy of which I had actually read the 1st, not knowing that there was a sequel, but now, of course, I have to get the 3rd. Goddamn trilogies! Write one book! Or something!

1. Today is quiet and I like that. I can get things done. I just wish I could remember what they were...
2. Sleeping puppies are cuuuuute.
3. Dollar dumplings tonight! Yay!

  1. I may have pushed the leftover beef veg soup one day too long. Tummy no happy.
  2. Going to see the parents this weekend, which means a long drive up what used to be a beautiful stretch of country, but is now pimpled with eyesore billboards: Branson, Missouri.
  3. In the process of getting some long-needed repairs done to the house. Very excited.

1. My blessedly timely, desperately-needed vacation is drawing to a close. Sigh.
2. Had brunch with my sister this morning, and planned another brunch for next week. (Lunch, really, but "brunch" sounds so much more relaxing.)
3. I have not written one word of the paper that's due Monday. This is most unlike me; usually, I spend a week or more writing, polishing, and rewriting. Why, oh why, aren't I writing my paper?

JanetLand, I'm so sorry. It's never easy.

(((JanetLand))) and cheers for baby 'pode!

1. Last day at DumbCo! Will be having a bit of drink at the Greenwich Village Bistro because I love their mac and cheese and I really want to support my favorite SoHo bar.

2. Excited about going to my first MeCha meetup in ages. I actually will be bringing a gift for SassHat, which is not a hat, but it is something that I was going to leave here at DumbCo as a part of my "legacy." Will also bring four other related gifts for anyone else who wants 'em.

3. Need to buy entirely new wardrobe and I have my first new job-related assignment on Sunday. MUST. LOOK. AWESOME.

1. Snow. WTF? Daffodils are looking sad and I saw a very very cold hummingbird at the feeder just now. Little Izzy Cross-Eyes is having a kittenish field day, though.

2. No work due to snow--boss is worried he won't be able to get his truck back up the hill to his place, plus probability of power outages (big wind + wet snow). This means work tomorrow & Sunday, but that's no big deal. However, this snow had better be gone tomorrow morning--we're barely going to be done by Friday as it is, and not done by Friday (when client is on island) = not getting paid for a while, as the client doesn't live here. Must pay rent, buy groceries, etc.

3. Beef back ribs for dinner! Will start steaming them soon. Need to figure out sauce that doesn't involve beer or wine, as I have neither and won't be going to the store (see 1.)

*hugs JanetLand, kicks everyone on seanyboy's shit list*

1. Am so full from Chinese food for lunch....ahhh.

2. My husband is trying to get McCain here to speak in Fayetteville (For the Trifecta! Ha!)

3. There have been a lot of accidents in my part of town this week-one gal from my church who was riding a bike was hit by a car (she's in fair condition), there was another bike/car accident that same morning, and then that same night a man from my church was hit on his motorcycle by a car and passed away. I don't think I knew him, but still.

THAT is why I do my riding in the spin room!

1) Bike race (my fave race of the year, in fact) on Sunday, tho it's forecast to snow.

2) this is a road race on dirt roads, so they'll cancel it if it does (mud and road bikes don't mix).

3) it spat snow yesterday and last night and is cold as fuck this AM. Wednesday it was 70 and gorgeous and it is forecast to do the same again on Saturday. *sigh* Colorado weather is about as predictable as a teething 2-year-old. YOU HEAR ME YOU FICKLE SPRING MOUNTAIN WEATHER?? SHAPE THE HELL UP!!

1. It's snowing. WTF. (See elizard's post.)

2. Two of my mother's closest friends have died this month, exactly two weeks apart. I went to the first funeral on the 15th, but can't go to the second one on the 31st, and I wish I could. Feeling badly for my mom.

3. I'm thinking seriously of canceling both my home internet and my cable. I'm living alone for the first time in my life, and discovering that what I might really want is a home without television or the online world-- just music in the evenings and reading/writing. I seem to be craving the "real" world as opposed to the virtual one. Anyone ever felt the same here?
posted by jokeefe 28 March | 13:49
I feel that quite often, jokeefe, but I have trouble making it stick when I try it.
posted by JanetLand 28 March | 13:52
I figure that I could give it a try for a couple of months and see what happens. I have spent vast amounts of my time/life online-- with growing intensity-- since a friend first showed me alt.music.alternative back in 1992. What, I wonder, would life be like without it?

1. FOUND AN UMBRELLA ON THE BUS
2. TURNED DOWN A JOB OFFER AT A DONUT SHOP
3. CAN'T STOP WATCHING THE EAGLE CAM BECAUSE I'M HOPING TO WATCH THEM SHOVEL THE SNOW OUT OF THE NEST.
posted by quonsar 28 March | 13:58
Try it without cable alone first and see if you can just not use the computer.

Dammit, Janet, we all understand kitty love and loss. It's one of the few unclouded issues we have here.

1. Expected cancellations fall right into my plans. Muhahahaha. Now i don't know if i'll get dressed...

2. It's blinding out. BLINDING. The sun and snow conspire to flash tan me, and i say nay. NAY.

3. Used towels will be used to dry cat, so cat must be washed before laundry can be done. Litter should be changed before cat is washed. If litter is to be changed, trash should be removed and bins cleaned when litter box is cleaned, sink contents should be cleaned first-- it's a vicious chain of events, dominos i don't feel like tipping over yet. i'm not even dressed.

Update on 1, above: Cold paws on the face are not that bad when attached to a soft, purring kitten.

1) All yardwork that was planned is now done except for rebuilding the pond (which will wait till next weekend). This means peas are planted and will sprout when it gets a wee bit warmer.
2) All repair work that I have been putting off since, like, forever has been done as well.
3) Now's the fun part of the spring break -- I am at a Marriott in Kansas City, two blocks from the Plaza, which I hung out at earlier. This is a weekend of ethnic food (Indian tonight, I hope!), the Home Show, and Science City with my husband.

Hugs to Janetland (I had to do that for my Kitty Kitty Kitty-Kitty last March, and I suspect I will have to do that for my 17-year-old Opalina one of these days unless she outlasts us all)

And a thankful congrats to Gaspode!

I am so sorry JanetLand.

1. in Boston
2. the panel that I am leading and being completely outside my head angry about [request changed from "oh can you be on a panel at 2 pm" to "oh can you lead a panel at 2 pm that is a response to the 9 am keynote AND the noon luncheon speaker?" and I was a doormat and said okay] will be over by 3:30 tomorrow and maybe my eye will stop twitching
3. I just wrote down all the things I am doing in April and it is a lot of things and I am concerned.

Anyone ever felt the same here?

Yes. When I'm in the pool one of the things I like the best is that I'm not "conencted" to anything besides the water. planning on more cabin/river time this summer.

1. Happy the snow we got this morning didn't stick (it's APRIL, go away!)

1. Tired, at work late last night. Going to try to convince the other tech to let me give him a ride home, so I can take carpool lane and take a nap soon.

2. Family visiting from Portland has changed their plans, so things are scattered for the night, so I don't know what I'm doing.

3. plugging seattle meetup tomorrow, because I am excited for it, and I want an excuse to drink bad beer out of bowling pin shaped bottles, then eat famous chili.
