Speaking of poetry I need some help with my wedding invitations→[More:] I've been looking for an excerpt of some non-vomit-inducing poetry (or even super-short prose) for my wedding invitation. It can't be longer than a 4-line stanza, or perhaps even 2 long-ish lines that I can split up. My favorite poets are Edna St. Vincent Millay (a little dark for a wedding), John Donne (a bit too lengthy), and E.E. Cummings (sometimes his poems are explicitly about sex). So yeah.

Oh, and also: pictures of vintage pin-up girls wearing halter tops would be pretty cool, too.

muddgirl, when I was faced with a similar problem, here is what I picked:

Believe
in my commitment
and the joy
you give me.

It's from A Lion in Winter and just struck me at the time.

I'm about to be posting more wedding dilemmas if that's any comfort. It's so stressful!

I Love this poem.

I'd take the bottom four lines...

and when the trick begins, it’s like a toe
tip-toeing on a rope, which is like luck;

Are you actually putting pictures of vintage pin-ups on the invitations? If so, maybe a few lines from a 40s song? (Assuming you're using 1940s pin-ups. Adjust decade as necessary.)

No, the pin-up girls are for something different. Perhaps they deserve their own post? Hmm... maybe I can finally wander back over to the green and ask about the pin-ups over there.

Thanks, guys. These are exactly what I was looking for: lots of realism and no, "The happiest moment is when a man and a woman devote themselves to each other" sort of shtick.
