Speaking of poetry I need some help with my wedding invitations[More:] I've been looking for an excerpt of some non-vomit-inducing poetry (or even super-short prose) for my wedding invitation. It can't be longer than a 4-line stanza, or perhaps even 2 long-ish lines that I can split up. My favorite poets are Edna St. Vincent Millay (a little dark for a wedding), John Donne (a bit too lengthy), and E.E. Cummings (sometimes his poems are explicitly about sex). So yeah.

Oh, and also: pictures of vintage pin-up girls wearing halter tops would be pretty cool, too.
No journey, experience, or revelation was ever so perfect that wasn't improved by precisely the right person to share it with.

muddgirl, when I was faced with a similar problem, here is what I picked:

Believe
in my commitment
and the joy
you give me.

It's from A Lion in Winter and just struck me at the time.

I'm about to be posting more wedding dilemmas if that's any comfort. It's so stressful!

I Love this poem.

I'd take the bottom four lines...

and when the trick begins, it’s like a toe
tip-toeing on a rope, which is like luck;
and when the luck begins, it’s like a wedding,
which is like love, which is like everything.

Ask metafilter thread

And I would say ...

Smile, curse, frown. Laugh
and cry. Rage with lust,
and together,
carry your love
like a fragile thing.

Are you actually putting pictures of vintage pin-ups on the invitations? If so, maybe a few lines from a 40s song? (Assuming you're using 1940s pin-ups. Adjust decade as necessary.)

No, the pin-up girls are for something different. Perhaps they deserve their own post? Hmm... maybe I can finally wander back over to the green and ask about the pin-ups over there.

Thanks, guys. These are exactly what I was looking for: lots of realism and no, "The happiest moment is when a man and a woman devote themselves to each other" sort of shtick.

"Marriage isn't mutual ownership.
It should be an act of trust
in each other's good sense and good intentions.
If a marriage is an expression of respect,
then it can add grace to love." Hugh Prather

"A good marriage is one which allows
for change and growth in the individuals
and in the way they express their love." Pearl S. Buck

"We have lived and loved together
Through many changing years;
We have shared each other's joys,
And wept each other's tears..." Charles Jefferys

"Coming together is a beginning;
Keeping together is a progress;
Working together is success." Anonymous

"The key to love is respect...
realizing that you are two separate people
with different ideas; that you don't belong
to each other, but that you belong with each
other and share a mutual bond." Robert M. Millay
