I have a thing for old bathrooms. I found this one one of of my 'drugruns' through the for sale ads. It's a huge sqm apartment in the center of Stockholm with high ceilings and really in dire need of renovation in some rooms, like the kitchen, but oh my god, classic old bathroom. Lurve! I adore the potential of this apartment in total. ≡ Click to see image ≡≡ Click to see image ≡
This white one comes from a very affordable apartment down my street. I love the window. :)
Also, why on earth did people *stop* tiling the entire bathroom? It lasts forever and is easy to keep clean. TILE PLEASE! ( itried to get the pictures next to each other but failed)
taz, you are such a kitchen tease! I used to love leafing through magazines like Home Decor or Interior Design and what have you, and imagine how my house was going to look after completion. After that, it was usually these second hand copies of Good Housekeeping or whatever it was that I'd buy and be transfixed to. Especially the Kitchens. There was always something about the kitchens which would draw me to them.
Ok, so in the mecha-house, Taz will be kitchen goddess (and make the soups!) while I happily offer to be the bathroom queen. I'll get tiles tiles tiles, black and white floors, and steel gates for water-drains, and big sinks and bidets! Oh, did i mention huge tubs? Big tubs. We all need a nice soak once in a while.
So easy to keep clean, spray with ajax, hose down. DONE!
Mmm I love the ceiling and the floors in that kitchen, taz.
We're totally redoing the upstairs bathroom right now. The room is currently down to the studs. It was pretty damn hideous when we moved in....horrible acoustic ceiling tiles, plastic fake woodgrain mouldings, cheap panelled walls, a very 70s (and not in a good way) formica countertop and blue fixtures....everything done as absolutely cheaply as possible.
So basically we can do anything we want, and I'm kind of annoyed with how my husband keeps getting his way. I wanted tiled walls and a clawfooted tub, we're getting a fiberglass tub surround and a boring vanilla drop-in tub (ugh ugh ugh) and drywall. I wanted a black and white parquet octagon tile floor, he championed vinyl tiles. Um...no. We are not having vinyl tiles. We compromised on wood parquet. I wanted two pedestal sinks, we're having one. After it became evident that he didn't want to do tiled walls, I lobbied for wallpaper...we're ending up with beadboard/wainscoting halfway up and painted walls above that. Which is really very nice, but we've had the cheap panelled walls in there forEVER and I didn't want to see any more vertical wooden lines.
None of the things we're ending up with are bad at all, it's just that he's mostly interested in how quickly he can redo things, while I'm mostly interested in authenticity and beautiful materials. So...bleh. I'm kind of over it already, and I was so excited before we started. It's a pet project of his - renovating the rooms one by one. He's an amazing craftsman....his work is gorgeous. I'm just not crazy about the materials. God I sound like such a brat.
Anyway, I'm all about the tiles in the bathroom....I love the look.
I'm all about a completely tiled bathroom as well. Our friend and neighbor is a tile person. We need to hire him, now! I have pretty wallpaper in the bathroom that I want to be rid of. The little kid drew big circles in red crayon on it a couple years ago. I got most of it off, but there is still some left. I shed a little tear each time I see it. It's not scrubbable wallpaper, unfortunately. We also have the cheapest of the cheap buildrer's special light fixture that is supposed to hold globe light bulbs that are exposed. My husband put in CFLs, it looks dorky as hell.
Oh damn, now I had to go look at stuff for sale again and fell in love with this awesome townhouse, the likes of which I'll never be able to afford. The photos only show the top two floors, but what a gorgeous house! (and as always when it comes to untouched treasures like these, odd old furniture indicating someone has lived their since forever and probably is no longer with us. Swedes have renovation-sickness and usually places like this are all sanded down, drywalled up and styled in the latest fashion when people with enough money come in and buy it. Money never indicates taste. This house has beautiful windows and doorways!)
At first glance it looks cozy, that ceiling is gorgeous, but then I noticed that every surface is covered and thought, where does one work in there. Where's all the free counter space. What a mish mash of 'storage' units. It's a little too hobbit-y. Notice the bench on the LHS, it has stuff on it, looks like photo albums on top of a wrapped present. Even at the foot of the bench it looks like there's a sewing machine. That small table on the RHS, crowded and loaded down with stuff. Way too much stuff in there, I think.
In short, where does one sit and work.
dabitch, that WC is so sterile and cold looking, what a great room though. I recently painted a similarly laid out one, same floor tile, instead of black&white, it was the same green as 'your' tiles and white. Where the tiled wall is, there was wainscoting instead [painted white, egshell sheen]. I wanted to paint the wainscoting in a lime wash, but the owners were selling the house and the cost wasn't worth it to them. The walls got painted a light cream. Wished I took before/after photos./
Did you catch this couch [I'd like lower sides, but..] [from a metafilter post], lookit those stairs.//
I love this kitchen counter top, Gold and mica looking.// They just finished remodelling the kitchen, so no knick-nacks, yet. That counter is a great start, not so sure about the rest.
I like all the pieces in this bathroom, but for some reason, when they're all put together it makes me think that that's the tub they used for shock treatments in mental health facilities in the 1940s. It's very institutional looking. Scary!
Hopefully I'll remember to take a photo of my fug bathroom later. Some of the glue that was used to adhere the cheap panelling is still on the plaster. One of the blobs looks like Willie Shoemaker and another looks like Wooly Willy. Or is it Hairy Harry?
dabitch, that townhouse is stunningly beautiful inside. That staircase and the railings, the ceilings, the door frames...WOW./// The space.///
A steal at $3,124,842.00 Cndn. You just won't find homes with such character here in Canada, at any price.
Expensive means wood panelling here. Too bad the online article didn't show the house from the outside [it's a small 2 storey] photo as it did in the print version.
I get yard lust because while I'm terrible at cooking, I am excellent at sitting outside smoking cigars and drinking beer. I wish I could afford this or this.
Just emailed the top pic to my wife. ..we are tiling the kitchen this summer and still have not chosen tiles. . .I think the above would be groovy, plus it would disguise the mud and the blood and the beer better. . .
argh! Don't tell me it's a steal alicesshoe, I want it bad already as it it. It's right by the center city canal (so pretty!) and the ceiling in the staircase alley (scroll down to last pic) makes my heart skip a beat. As does those lead and stained glass windows at the top (scroll down again). That's it, I'm going to play the lotto. Cyas.
i want to draw up plans for the manse. i made one for a reasonable "dream house" so i'll just incorporate that on the property or integrated it, even if only by tunnels and walkways.
I didn't think I'd find anything about it, so yay!
I love love love the house in Practical Magic. I found a website that shows photos of the interiors (which I'm sure were on a lot somewhere) and exteriors. The kitchen is my kitchen.
I'm going to save the site and make a Sims2 house!
