I just noticed yesterday that the pear trees in front of our house are blooming. The dogwoods look ready to pop at any moment, too, and we also got our first iris (a white one- we also have purple and yellow ones in there) over the weekend.
I just came in from taking the dog outside, and it's exactly like the first day of spring out there. What a long, dreary, snowy winter this was--the snowiest one ever. It was pretty, but I'm sure glad it's over. Happy first day of spring, everyone!
On the way in to work today, I spotted my first wildflowers in the highway divider!
I think south/central Texas has the best spring I've ever seen. The wildflowers are simply incredible. It's definitely my favorite season here, despite my spring allergies.
Sunny and 45 degrees here in Middle of Nowhere, MO. I'm seeing the beginning of mint and tarragon peeking up, plus some errant hollyhocks that THINK they're supposed to be growing in my herb garden. The saffron crocus' leaves are peeking up (they're right by the house, southern exposure). No flowers, though, until this fall, when I will harvest the saffron (and have just enough for one batch of medieval bukenade, a rich chicken soup). The sorrel is just peeking up -- with some tarragon and chervil, it will make a nice spring soup come late April. This reminds me I need to plant some chervil.
The greenhouse plants are thriving -- enough of the following to share with my father: Cherokee purple tomato, evergreen tomato, Thai pepper, peter pepper (which looks just like you think!), aji dulce (looks like a habanero, but is milder than a jalapeno). Also, three types of thai eggplant (including my last attempt to grow Thai pea eggplant in this climate), plus some flowers (dianthus, datura, jasmine tobacco, woodland tobacco) and herbs (lovage, parsley, lemon balm, catnip, hyssop)
