AAARGH! Driver hits pedestrian, long-winded rant inside... o_O [More:]

So, I just got back from helping the officer on the scene complete the accident report.

GOD I HATE PEOPLE. This is what happened.

Gorgeous day, everyone's out doing something. I work in a busy-ish throughfare office-park-y kind of area with lots of ped, bike, car traffic. There are good sidewalks, bike lanes and lots of people use them on their way to/from the local eateries.

I was minding my own business, riding my bike back from lunch. I'm on a secondary, about to come up to the main route to turn left (there's a traffic light) Pedestrian is crossing the street in front of me, in the crosswalk, she has the light & right of way, no worries, right?

Wrong. A car, driven by a young-ish female type, makes a right turn (U.S. traffic pattern, left side drive) into the secondary without looking and FUCKING PLOWS INTO this poor lady. Thank GOD she wasn't killed or seriously maimed! She's going to have some major bumps and bruises, but the paramedics seemed to think she was mostly okay. No broken bones, at any rate. They did transport her because they're worried she's got a concussion. She's gonna be stiff and sore all over for a long time, though. I feel really, really bad for her, she wasn't a young lady, just an average office lady kind of lady.

Here's the rant. It turns out the driver was FUCKING TEXTING as she was driving, and not really looking where she was going. Oh, and you want to know the real kicker? She wanted us not to call the cops because she was worried about having 'too many points on her licence...' OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE!

I won't go into the meltdown I had right there on the scene (I was the only witness) because, well, basically I was incensed and probably more than a little incoherent. But I do remember going off and saying stuff like THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY and IT SERVES YOU RIGHT IF YOUR LICENCE GETS YANKED and, well, just in general being completely bitchy and offensive.

I mean, oh, my god, you just nearly fucking KILLED SOMEONE and you want us to just pretend like it never fucking HAPPENED? And then I told her she'd better damn think twice about leaving the scene, cos she sorta seemed like that had occurred to her, because I had her plate number and had just dialled 911.

I told the officer the whole story. He seemed very calm and sympathetic to both me and the poor lady who got hit. I volunteered to make a full statement in court, if it comes to that.

I am shaking. I want to kick things. I think I'm just going to go home at this point because I can't think straight.

I am so fucking sick of the shitty irresponsible drivers in this country that I could just puke. I mean, every single damn day I have to make allowances for some prat who doesn't look in their sideview or who thinks they can beat me to the cutoff because I'm on a bike, or who thinks I have no right to the road. And now this bullshit.

I need a bunny something fierce right now.

Jeez, lfr, that's awful. I'm glad that the paramedics think she'll be okay.

That kind of behaviour whilst driving should result in automatic loss of licence. Texting whilst driving? What a moron.

Ugh. I've seen pedestrians hit twice in my life- once from a distance (that person was killed) and then a few months ago, a woman walking twenty feet ahead of me was hit BY A POLICE CAR.

To this day I'm a very nervous pedestrian. Seeing someone hit like that is VERY upsetting.

Taking the rest of the day off is a good idea, lfr.

I almost hit another driver yesterday who pulled out from her stop without looking because she was too busy yakking on her phone. When I become emperor, folks like that will be the first against the wall.

Oooooooo, what an evil biyatch. I'm glad you were there to be a witness.

Holy shit, that's awful. I would be furious too if I were you. And I completely agree that she should lose her license.

Was she at all remorseful or worried for the woman she hit, or just for herself? I can't get over how crappy people can be sometimes.

ico, the driver was completely freaking out and in tears, but I could honestly give a shit about that, mostly because the minute she opened her mouth, she only seemed worried about the consequences to herself, not to the poor victim.

Oh, right, I also got the victim's business card and called her office to let them know what happened, since she was a little fuzzy after the wreck. They're upset, to say the least. I'm also concerned she might have a shoulder separation/injury from the way she fell, and those are horrible if you're a deskjockey.

Unbelievable. Well, no, guess it's not anymore...
*sigh*

Go look after yourself. And, thanks for looking after the lady who was hit.

I am happy in wasn't worse. You did some good things today lfr.

Good thing you were there, lfr. God, I loathe people who text etc. while driving. I got a ride home with a colleague yesterday, and the whole time he was calling people, playing with his GPS, getting stuff out of the glovebox... I felt really unsafe. I won't be accepting a ride from him again.

Oh, LFR, you are my hero today.

Not only are we bunnies here but along with you we make up a bunny army that IS something fierce, for just these types of occasions.

Sending a pile of whuffles to you, and a pile of proxy whuffles to the poor victim.

I'm really glad you yelled at her.

LFR, I am so sorry to hear about this. I have been in that situation, and it is unnerving, and surprisingly emotionally intense, given that someone else actually got hit.

I personally hope several times a week that gas will become too expensive, or that maybe we will run out soon. I know, not really the best scenario for everyone, but I long since came to the realization that these people aren't really going to change their behavior voluntarily.

I say go home and do something nice for yourself, or better yet, get the feller to do something nice for you. ;-)

I'm glad the pedestrian is seemingly going to be okay. I'm really glad that you weren't hit, too. I'm really, really glad that you were there to be a witness.

Yes, go home, take a hot bath or a long shower, do whatever it takes to unwind.

*big hugs*

I can't text and walk (i try but always stop one or the other makes me feel so old) - how on earth do people get the stupid idea to do it when driving!?

lfr, thank you for speaking up. The injured person may need witnesses to come forward in court or for depositions. Even if she thinks she's unscathed, the next weeks and months may show otherwise.

About a year ago, I was the pedestrian in this situation. The driver plowed right into me and later told me she was looking at the parking space right behind me, and someone looked right through me. Yup.

I thought I was okay, too, until the bruises and strains healed and I realized that my back was getting worse, not better. A year later, I have what appears to be a permanent back injury and a sharply restricted range of normal activity.

I'm lucky that the driver admitted her fault; not one witness stuck around or made contact with the police.

So, by proxy, I'm thanking you for sticking around and documenting the accident.

LFR, Thank you for staying and offering to be a witness. I was once that pedestrian, but I got it a little worse: one badly broken left leg. I still have a metal bar inside the tibia and a dent that looks like a second belly button just above my ankle, ten years later.

Luckily, the woman who hit me was NOT like Ms. Irresponsible-heart-of-Teflon that you encountered today.

Thank you for not turning away, not deciding "not to get involved" -- and I hope you kicked the friggin' headlights out of the car that clipped you later!

Truth is not bitchy and offensive. Especially life saving truth. The people who conditioned you to believe that should be tortured to death in front of their pets.

I think that in addition to losing their license, they should be banned from using telecommunications devices. Like Kevin Mitnick. Send 'em to coventry.
