What is/was for dinner? [More:]

I'm having some nice borlotti beans and brown rice, along with leftover roasted turnips. (With caraway! They were yummy!) Probably some roasted brussels sprouts too, if I feel like cleaning them. Dag, sounds healthy.

You?
Irish breakfast from the diner. with Guiness and Jameson's.

I'm on a cooking strike this weekend; I can't deal. So I will probably order something later. Most likely pizza.

um, we were s'posed to make pasghetti, but then for lunch we had some many apertifs and ate some sausage my husband acquired (and I don't like sausage, but wow this was good)... and fell asleep and didn't cook. So of course I woke up at 2 a.m. and now it's almost 3:30 and why am I drinking coffee?

Totally not healthy. (and pasghetti tomorrow... er, today, then.)

I had dinner at a friend's house. She made a Jamie Oliver recipe, but left out the essential part about frying the bacon-wrapped fish for a minute before putting it in the oven. She also used thick-cut back bacon, not thin-cut streaky. So although the fish was cooked after 10 minutes, the bacon was almost raw. My friend ate it all but I had to leave the bacon (her dog ate it).

She also did chickpeas, spinach and onion with cumin and garlic. All I can say is that you would not wish to be in the room with me now.

It was more of a lunch/dinner kinda thing, but I had a crabcake and some blackberries.

Before I had my mid-afternoon nap, I ate some delicious boneless bbq spare ribs from a new Chinese restaurant.

We eat like shit in this household.

This morning, about nine, I had a bagel with Lebanon Baloney and Swiss Cheese. I need to eat soon.

Dinner with my parents at a Chinese restaurant in the 'burbs called, 'Ginger and Onion' in English, and 'Add Onions!' in Cantonese. (I don't know why.) Anyway, quite affordable, fresh food. I don't know any of the names of the dishes, sorry.

Starter: Some kind of soup made with pork bones and some odd vegetable matter like lotus roots, chestnuts I think with a clear broth.

Shared dishes: Crispy roast chicken with seasoned salt and big translucent shrimp chips, a fresh fish steamed with soya sauce, ginger, green onions and lotsa coriander (yum!), assorted big ass mushrooms (like oyster, king, shiitake) and chinese broccoli stir-fry, fried rice with barbeque pork, and plain rice. (Because I like plain rice with fish. Who eats fried rice with fish?)

Dessert was a choice between red bean soup (sweet) or sweetened silken tofu. I had a bit of both. Oh? Did I mention affordable? Dinner for three came to $35 (Cdn.)

Homemade bread hot out of the oven with copious amounts of butter and local honey. Decadent.

We went to a kid thing that was catered by Fazoli's. If you're not familiar with Fazoli's, it's fast-food Italian. I had fettucine alfredo and ziti.

Lebanon Baloney

i keep seeing that as Lebaloney.
i also keep thinking i answered this one already.
Finished off some roasted cauliflower and taco leftovers.
It was good.
Roasted asparagus is nice, too.

I read in Eat This, Not That! (review: great for people who do a lot of eating at strip-mall chain restaurants, or for someone who wishes to read a book-length magazine article) that Fazoli's puts carrot puree in their pizza sauce. It's like they read that Jessica Seinfeld book or something.

It's on the stove at the moment, but we're having pasta in a seat-of-the-pants tomato sauce - basically, anything that looked good in the fridge and pantry went in (carrots, red pepper, kalamata olives, mushrooms, spicy Italian sausage, and of course onion, garlic, oregano and red wine). I'm hungry.

It would probably not surprise anyone if I reported that the pizza delivery guy was totally stoned, but: Dude. The pizza delivery guy was *totally* stoned.

I wonder if pizza delivery guys get to read a lot.

I had bran flakes with organic raisins for breakfast.

White bean spread on a whole wheat roll, a handful of carrot sticks, a little blanched broccoli, and several cocktails of cranberry juice, seltzer, and vodka. And a big bowl of cashews. A big bowl.

Elsa, ha!

This guy forgot his pen (which was the first thing he said to me, loudly, when I opened the door. "I FORGOT MY PEN!"), so I went upstairs to get one and while he was waiting on the porch, he started singing. LOUDLY. Like, super loudly. Super super duper loudly. Then it took us about three minutes to sort out who got which receipt.

It was a whole thing, really.

Hee, occchi, that's funny!

I had leftover pasta, mixed with chard sauteed in olive oil and garlic, red peppers and onions, and parmesan and ricotta. There's a little more in the fridge and I think I may have to finish it off.

In my old apartment, I routinely --- like, twice a month --- had a conversation with the same really really stoned delivery guy who had a lot of trouble getting his head around the idea that I hadn't ordered food, that it was probably (once again) for the people next door.

Every time.

From the article:
"Sadly, for millions of pizzas, interaction with non-stoned humans is simply not an option," Dernier said. "That's why it's crucial that those of us who are not higher than shit on primo weed occasionally take the time to order a pizza to offset this overwhelming imbalance and give some of our pies a chance to be exposed to alternative, non-stoned lifestyles."

So you've done your part, occhiblu. Congratulations.

Fried shrimp, slaw, hushpuppies, beer and oreo cake for which I had to pay a $4 St. Pat's cover in downtown Roanoke. I left Rabbi Joshualand (Lynchburg) earlier today, but I'm very glad to finally be on my Virginia trip!

Gaspode, where did you have Mexican?

We had buffalo chicken strips (frozen, from Safeway, surprisingly good) and poutine (french fries, tons of grated cheese and gravy). Yummm.

Dunno what's on for tonight.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: There are some damned good cooks on this site.

I spent the day with my uncle (who's recovering at great speed from his surgery, for those who saw my previous post on that), and made him cod fillets poached in lemon juice and parsley, and whole wheat noodles tossed with olive oil, spinach, green onions, sesame sauce, and a bit of soy. The noodles were good, but the fish had a weird texture, I think from being frozen too long or too many times or something. He still loved it--he even ate mine.

Leftovers from last night: garlic eggplant, a little crispy chicken, rice. Also microwaved up some kale, separately, and had some pineapple for dessert.

It was nice.

I am answering this question again, because I had a much better dinner this night than last.

Tonight I broiled a grass-fed steak, seasoned with salt and pepper, and I boiled a bunch of baby red potatoes and tossed them with butter and parsley and salt and pepper, and I actually overcooked them a bit but that was good because they came out all creamy. And I roasted some beets and put them in a salad with organic baby lettuce and Point Reyes blue cheese, with a homemade dijon vinaigrette. And the great thing about cooking at home is that when you realize, halfway through the salad, that it needs more blue cheese, you can just get up and add more blue cheese!

The above was accompanied by a Chateau St. Jean pinot. I had Green & Black dark chocolate for dessert, accompanied by bourbon. I don't know what kind of bourbon, except that it had a silver horse on the cork and it was good.

Fried chicken, beans, and mashed potatoes in bacon cups with the missus and me3dia. The chicken was a little salty, but the bacon (and turkey bacon) cups were way better than expected.

And then I had muffins at a strip club. But I digress.
