14 March 2008

I've got a 12-pack of Guiness in the icebox, and it's March. That can only mean one thing. It's St. Paddy's Day weekend!! So I give you the South Boston Irish's gift to punk fuckin' rawk, the Dropkick Murphys![More:]

Irish Drinking Song
Rocky Road To Dublin
Dirty Water (live in front of a rabid audience in South Boston on St. Patrick's Day, a Murphy's tradition. One of these years I'll make it up there)

and the grandaddy of them all,
The Spicy McHaggis Jig

So, Up The Republic, Pogue Mahone and Erin Go Braless to all my Hibernian brothers and sisters!
Oi, we like the Gobshites as well!

For the dudes: worst St. P's day pickup line evah -

You got any Irish in you?

You want some?

Ha! I love St. P's. Somebody throw me a cabbage!

In my case with some marinara on the side for dipping. (my map-of-county-cork face has gotten me more free drinks from Irish expats in NYC over the years, so god bless it!)

St. Paddy's day is the 25th anniversary of the day my husband asked me to marry him.

I've known two great Irish Heritage Fellows who were born on St. Pat's. Sadly, one is no longer with us. It fit them both very well.

No thread about booze, Boston, and rawk would be complete without a nod to The Real Kids (MySpace link). Listen to "Bad To Worse" -- it fucking rules.

Well, like Barry O'Bama, I'm Amerikan by birth but Irish by the grace of God and half Swedish because that's where my mom's people are from, but the point that we need to focus on here is that before my Dad's people lived in Jersey City since the 1880's they lived in various shanties, cottages and slums in Belfast, Cork and Dublin and that's what is at issue here, I'm feckin' of Irish descent and I'm going to give myself a dispensation to have a dram or eight and have one for yerself if you're of the mind. Also, Dropkick Murphy's and go and fuck yourselves. All my love,

D. Wino Reilly, Half-Fenian/American/Viking.

Also, while we're at it, here's the Pogues and the Dubliners sawing away at the Irish Rover.

La Fheile Paidraig everyone!
(AFAIK, the Irish Government have moved the parade to today. There were huge ructions with the Catholic church as officially Paddy's Day celebrations kick off with a High Mass in Irish in the Pro-Cathedral in Dublin and it's just not done to tamper with the religious calendar don't ye know, so I have no idea what resolution they've come to in the end.)

Shortly after we were married, my husband said he would give me a "true Irish breakfast" on St. Patrick's Day.

He handed me a bowl with only the green Apple Jacks in it.

Lucinda, I was almost certain that that anecdote would include the words "Lucky Charms"...
