Tell me about your wardrobe [More:]Are you satisfied with it? What things woudld you like to add to it? What things do you want to or wish you could get rid? How do you cycle through what you have (i.e. do you wear everything once for a week, and then start over the next week? Or something else?) Do you think your clothes represent you well?
No.
Everything.
So many things.
No.
No.

Give me money.

Way too many t-shirts, though I can't bear the thought of throwing out any of the ones I have. Way too many shoes to be a convincing heterosexual man, according to my wife.

I think I'm outgrowing a fair chunk of my wardrobe -- age-wise, not size-wise. I've got plenty of grown-up clothes for work: button-up shirts, khakis, that sort of thing, but it's mostly run-of-the-mill company attire, and it's bleeding more and more into my casual wear as well, since a lot of my casual stuff is beginning to feel age-inappropriate. I feel I have no style -- nothing I wear is offensive or goofy-looking or anything like that, but it's mostly vanilla stuff, and I feel like I should have a bit more going on there. I'm a low-key sort of guy, but there's gotta be a way to balance understated and distinctive.

I actually started thinking about this a couple of weeks ago when I bought a pair of orange shoes (fuck yes) at a clearance sale, and found it oddly liberating. I believe that all of us carry within our souls a small pair of orange shoes, and we should take them out and show them to the world if we are ever to be free.

My wardrobe consists of

- jeans - both blue and black
- a pair of black trousers
- short-sleeved T-shirts - lots of 'em, mostly plain, black, white, grey or navy, a few patterned or coloured ones
- an assortment of sweaters, sweatshirts, cardigans, hoodies, long-sleeved T-shirts
- two skirts (I last wore one nearly 2 years ago)
- a few fancy tops
- one dress I last wore 4 years ago and probably will never wear again but won't get rid of for sentimental reasons

As we have a casual dress code at work, I tend to wear jeans all the time, with a T-shirt, and, depending on the weather, either another layer on top, or not. I stick to the same plain T-shirts and sweaters for work. I have some fancier ones for when I go out, with detail on them.

I have no interest in fashion for myself (although I love reading about it and watching Project Runway and shows about fashion), no clue about what to wear or what suits me, except that I know I can't wear yellow, orange or brown.

Buying clothes is an ordeal for me. I can go shopping for clothes and spend an entire day in an agony of indecision and ever-diminishing self esteem. I usually end up buying nothing, or coming with, yes, another couple of T-shirts.

I think my clothes do represent me well. I'm very shy and prefer to stay in the background, and I wear clothes that won't make me stand out. I cringe when I see people who dress 'age inappropriately' with skirts too short, necklines too low, in clothes that don't suit them. But then who am I to comment when all I wear is jeans and t-shirts?

Reading this back has made me feel a bit sad.

After a few years running around New York, a lot of the casual and/or crazy vintage stuff I wore in college didn't fit anymore, which gave me a great excuse to buy new stuff. In the last 6 months or so, I've felt good about what I do have and the direction I'm going- I have a lot of good classic pieces, with a decent amount of trendy, sassy stuff, too. I would really like to invest in some decent SHOES that aren't totally shredded after 3 months (like the knee high boots I bought at DSW- sad, I thought spending more than I spend at Payless would help, but I think this pair is worse than any of the Payless ones I've had).

middleclasstool: I have orange shoes! Leather orange loafers. I got them at DSW cheap cheap; sadly, the plastic chain over the top of them cinches them too tight in the front (which is probably why they were so cheap), so I can only wear them for small windows of time.

I have a hard time expanding out of "slacks and a monochrome button-up or polo shirt and sweater" for work clothes, or "jeans and a monochrome t-shirt or tank top" for casual clothes. I've been watching a lot of "What Not to Wear", and I still can't put together an outfit to save my life. But I think it's getting better. Another problem is that I don't have the energy to buy more than one or two things when I go shopping, so I'm trying this whole "online" thing.
posted by muddgirl 14 March | 15:56
I also have problems expanding beyond slacks-and-button-up or jeans-and-t-shirt, but I'm totally okay with that.

My preferred wardrobe consists of skirts, boots, sweaters and lipsticks. Sundresses in the summer.

I have to wear suits at work and I'm in the process of replacing all the traditional suit suits I own with Misook and St John knits. Because so much nicer! Easier to care for. Easier to pack. More comfortable. And classier.

I thoroughly lack in good bags, but I can never seem to find ones I like.

I'm reasonably happy with my clothes, since I've started switching over to fewer, higher quality pieces, started throwing away things I never wear and started buying more things that work with other things I already have.

I guess it suits me. I certainly feel comfortable in my clothes. Not like I'm in a costume.

The further I get into middle age, the more I suspect that it's probably time to start dressing like an adult. The thing is, though, shopping for clothes makes me die inside. I would rather do almost anything else. Also, I'm quite comfortable in my jeans, t-shirts and flannels.

Ultimately, fuck it. It's on my mind, but I don't really care enough to do anything about it.

my wardrobe can be tidily summed up as an amalgam of bike messenger + college student + granola outdoorsy fleece Coloradan.

Sure, I've got dressy clothes, but I rarely wear them, and I'm quite happy with my wardrobe as it is. Everything I wear with any kind of frequency is wash-n-wear. The mister and I are interchangeable sizes for the most part, so we end up wearing each other's stuff, too. He yoinks my hoodies on a regular basis, but then I tend to use his ski pantz rather than buy my own, and we have a common pool of 'house shoes' (crocs, mud boots and some incredibly fugly wool moccasin indoor house slipper kinda things).

I think this is a highly region-specific thing, though. It's not that Coloradans don't possess any sense of style (I've seen dramatic evidence to the contrary) but to most HR departments in this region, 'business casual' means 'please just show up fully clothed'. our automation specialist (translation: midlevel engineer / manager) wears flipflops, 3/4 length boardshorts and a CU hoodie every day, including when it snows. the director of QA is rarely seen in a collared shirt and I doubt he even owns a pair of non-denim slacks.

Wearing Converse and/or a cowboy hat to the theatre is a time-honoured tradition in Denvah.

For many years, I ran a posh boutique and dressed the part. I wore georgeous dresses or well-coordinated outfits, beautiful scarves, funky jewelry and shoes. Friends and customers used to tell me I was "striking" or "dashing" and "the shop's best advertisement."

Now I wear the most practical clothing I can to accommodate long days at school as well as walks and busrides home in all kinds of weather. Most days lately, I feel drab and invisible.

The real me falls somewhere between. I like simple clothes: spare lines, solid colors, and fluid fabrics. I like big chunky jewelry. I like shoes, boots, and handbags with little or no ornament. I almost always wear a scarf. I seem to have thoroughly eschewed bracelets and rings. I wear far too much black.

I was injured about a year ago, and gained some weight as a result, so most of my favorite clothes no longer fit. More than the weight, though, I realize that since the injury, I've felt old and tired and broken.

Once upon a time, I dressed with panache. I want to reclaim some of that. I want "striking" back. I want "dashing" back.

It's funny how many fashion things are region-specific, and it's even funnier to me that not all of them are not weather related (my sister and her friends in West Palm Beach love Uggs).

funny you say that TPS. There's an old joke running around Boulder that goes something like this:

summer shoes = birkenstocks
winter shoes = birkenstocks with socks

the dudes in this region tend to wear shorts and sandals in freezing ass cold weather.

winter shoes = birkenstocks with socks

Years ago I wrote an article for a popular design magazine and I worked in the (obviously hyperbolic) line that Austinites' idea of dressing up for a night out on the town was to wear socks with their Birkenstocks.

Not only did the magazine publish it, but I've since seen it reprinted, in odd places, as 'fact.'

LOL, my sister brought her Uggs up her on her spring break, and she swore up and down to me that hers don't smell. I smelled them, and they didn't, but I had a little cold.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 14 March | 16:30
Uggs - you would think they would be wildly popular here at 5,000', where the temperatures can and do go below freezing even on summer nights, no?

No. Uggs here are apparently seen as the sartorial equivalent of Hello Kitty. Fourteen year olds and the odd college freshman will wear them. I've rarely, rarely seen them on anyone over the legal drinking age, and they're not even all that common.

What things would you like to add to it?

I've been taking myself on shopping detours once a week all month, hoping to find some things to spice up my wardrobe that I can wear now, not when I've lost some weight.

Things I want to add:
- More color. No black, lots of blue. Bottle green would be good, too.
-another good pair of trousers in --- okay, yes --- black.
- Shoes or boots that are practical for walking but not boring. After the injury last year, I had to retire all shoes with a heel over an inch, i.e., all but two pairs of shoes, including a brand-new never-worn pair of high-heeled boots. (I found some new boots last week, and they make me feel a bit of a minx. Yay, me!)
- A sexy dress.
- A spring coat.

It's funny. In the dozen-odd years I spent in the midwest, I almost forgot I liked clothes.

Now that I'm in California, I'm back to the kinds of things I love an dused to wear in Montreal and Toronto: scarves, layers, nice boots.

You asked this on a bad laundry day, though. Right now I'm currently wearing a dubious hippie-cowgirl shirt covered with pink and brown paisleys.

But no matter how hard I try, I never have enough socks, it's like they walk off on their own.

One of my best inheritances from my late father's estate, no kidding, was a big shopping bag filled with moderately nice woolen socks, most of them still in their mail-order wrappers. I didn't know that slightly more expensive socks were so much nicer. Now I do, and I'm never going back.

But I don't know where the hell those socks have all gone. I started out with several dozen pairs in assorted colors. Now I have perhaps six matched pairs, and a few solos.

Man, I would love to be well dressed, but ultimately my laziness trumps my desire to look good.

I do have nice clothes, but the majority of my wardrobe is t-shirts, jeans, hoodies and a couple of sweaters. My clothing choices are dictated from which gift cards my parents in law give me for my birthday/christmas.

Ooh, on the subject of socks, I need help:

I am looking for a pair of men's socks, athletic sock thickness (not dress socks), that are either bright red or bright emerald green, solid color with no pattern. I have been looking every goddamn where for them, especially during Christmas and St. Patty's day, and I CANNOT FIND THEM.

Green's preferable, but red is also desired. Does anyone know of someone who manufactures such a thing?

I love clothes, but my job requires a certain color of pant, and a work shirt (supplied by the company, horrible polyester, with a logo). By the time I get home, I'm usually too tired to change or I'll change into something really comfortable (and sloppyish). But on my days off....I like to wear nice things. Nothing over the top, but on the one day I can take my kid to the bus-stop, the other mothers' have commented how nice I look. I've gotten smarter, too, I think, when it comes to style. I know I'm curvy, but I'm getting away from boxy, shapeless things, and wearing more form-fitting (but not tight) styles. And when I find a pant or jean that I love, I get several. My current jean favorite? Lane Bryant's line of color fit jeans. Yellow for those with not much waist/hip definition; red for some definition; blue for the biggest difference between hip/waist ratio. Even the length (for us short gals) is perfect.
Other than that - I am a coat/shoe/purse whore. I just can't get enough of any of them. Much as I like heels though, my feet just don't want anything over 2 inches.

Several pairs of Levi's tight-fitting, sveral plaid flannel shirts, a few solid colored ones, a couple of sports hoodies, several t-shirts (I've since added to the collection), lots of white tube sox, sevel plaid cotton boxers, three pairs of black boxer briefs, a pair of black Chuck Taylors, a pair of black Timberlands, two leather jackets, a few dress shirts (one all black like Johnny Cash), afew pairs of dress pants, a couple sweaters, a LA Kings #99 hockey jersey, a silver LP charm on a piece of twine, three pairs of earrings (the screwheads, the bullet primers, small hoops), a wedding band, and roughly 12 baseball caps.

What this defines my 'style' as, I don't know.

Oh, wardrobes.

As far as mine is concerned, I've only recently begun to buy things that are more what I might actually wear instead of things I hope to wear. For example, I went through a few months where I bought many things that would be appropriate for clubbing, but definitely nothing office-like. Even though the last time I went clubbing was over a year ago. I tend to run towards cheap clothing, because I get very bored with what I have in about 6 months (and then it goes to my much-more fashionable roommate from college or gets donated). I'm a bit bigger (18/20/22 depending on the store/part) so I feel a bit constrained as far as what I can wear/get away with is concerned.

I'm a bit conservative as far as getting dressed goes. I don't like most of my body and therefore, I'm not exactly all 'here are my bits'. I might wear a semi-low-cut blouse once a year, or tank tops, but always underneath something else. If I wear shorts, they tend to be pretty dumpy and if I wear skirts, I wear stockings underneath, even in the summertime. I wear a lot of black but I've recently begun to branch into color, which is quite frightening.

I'm also horrific at putting things together. I never know what exactly 'goes' together and so I often retreat (on the weekends) to jeans+tshirt+Otep hoodie. I also do this because it seems like whenever I do put on real clothes and go into public that people stare at me, which I find extremely bothersome (it makes me paranoid because I think they're thinking about me in their heads). I've only recently begun to experiment with outfits in sites such as Polyvore, but I'm nowhere near bold enough to wear them outside yet.

For work, I tend to stick to a relatively simple combination: jeans, tank top, long sleeved blouse, buttoned sweater, flats. This is mostly due to the fact that I drive a forklift and skirts would just not be practical at all (especially since the forklift is pretty dirty.) The jeans+tshirt+hoodie is all on the weekends, when I go shopping with mom. She tends towards picking out things for me that would either be better suited for a child (in size and style) or that would look better on her (same thing). Plus, whenever I go shopping with her, it almost always ends in tears because she makes comments like 'well if you lost some weight, it would fit'.

Good god, I've written a book. To answer your questions, TPS:

Are you satisfied with it?
As of right now, no. I don't think I ever will be. I always feel like there are things that could be culled, but I'm afraid that if I get rid of something, there will be that ONE occasion that I will need it for. Plus, I'm always adding bits to it.

What things woudld you like to add to it?
I'm working on getting more color into it and buying things that are actually in my size or that actually fit instead of just guessing at it and buying something that might be a bit bigger because 'I'll take it to the tailor' and/or 'I'll never find another deal like this again!'

What things do you want to or wish you could get rid?
I always want more sweaters. More jeans. Sometimes I wish I could get rid of some of the more...revealing tops I own, but I know that I have to keep them around, just in case I actually do get invited out somewhere.

How do you cycle through what you have (i.e. do you wear everything once for a week, and then start over the next week? Or something else?)
I tend to stick to a pretty reliable pattern for work, and just go through all my tops until I run out and realize that I guess that means that I have to do laundry.

Do you think your clothes represent you well?
To some extent, yeah. I tend to wear more dumpy clothes, with all my bits covered. I don't think that I advertise what I'm not willing to offer (which sounds absurdly trashy, now that I write it out like that). But I think that if I just had the energy to put more effort into being somewhat fashionable, that maybe things would suck so much, but then I get the stares and decide against it.
posted by sperose 14 March | 19:47
What Specket said, plus, I actually desperately need to buy work clothes and shoes, and have some unexpected funds to do it, but I can't find anything I like in my budget. Not to mention the fact, TPS, as you mentioned, things just don't last. Also, weight. The three-five-seven pounds I vacillate between presents a huge challenge in what I wear daily.

I can feel the women wanting me as take my baby to day care.

My wardrobe is large, eclectic, sometimes-funky-sometimes-utter-slob. Lots of black skivvies (turtlenecks), opaque or patterned tights with boots and a funky A-line skirt or mini in winter.

I hate shopping - I'm too short and nothing ever fits properly and I get bored and fed up after 15mins so buy a lot from charity shops and online. I love Etsy. Lots of my clothes are old - I have a lot of my late grandmother's clothes and inherited her love of large, chunky jewellery. I have 4 pairs of Docs (black mary-janes, black 10-holes and 2 pairs of sandals) that I mainly wear, but also like to wear heels sometimes.

I can wear whatever I like at work, so I dress depending on who I need to intimidate or impress, and how far I have to walk that day!

Are you satisfied with it?
Satisfied with the number of things, yes, but I get bored with the selection.

What things would you like to add to it?
Another pair or two of Crocs. I don't care that they're ugly (actually, that's part of their charm). They are the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. I've worn my brown pair all winter with a pair of socks when necessary (brown socks, to coordinate, of course).

What things do you want to or wish you could get rid?
There's a lot of stuff in my closet to get rid of this Spring. I got rid of a lot of stuff (well, it's in bags in the garage) when we moved into the house and it was as if a weight had been lifted off of my shoulders. I can't wait to get rid of more stuff.

How do you cycle through what you have (i.e. do you wear everything once for a week, and then start over the next week? Or something else?)
Most days I wear a pair of sweat pants and one of my older tshirts (shirts I won't wear in public any more). In warmer weather it's a pair of capris instead of sweats. I don't go out much so what I wear at home usually gets worn a couple times before going into the wash. I don't really cycle, it's kind of erratic - it depends on what I'm in the mood to wear.

Do you think your clothes represent you well?
Definitely. They're casual, but tidy, not "fashionable" but not out of fashion. I tend to wear what I want to wear and I know what looks good on me, not what's "in" or "hip" for the next 15 minutes. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just not "me". Plus, I don't like spending a lot of money on clothes and I'd have to to keep up with what's hot right now.

This is what I wear:

Trousers: 1 pair khaki, 1 pair black, 2 pairs blue jeans, 1 pair black jeans, 5-7 pairs of capris (I don't wear shorts any more, so hush)

Tops: 5-7 sweaters, 5-7 tshirts with varying sleeve lengths and decoration, 3-4 hoodie-type tops

Shoes: 1 pair sandals, 1 pair crocs, 1 pair black lace ups, 1 pair brown loafers, 1 pair brown lace up boots, 1 pair black lace up boots, 1 pair runners

Outerwear:
5-6 jackets of varying weights

I also have, but don't wear, and will keep "in case":
2 black skirts, 1 dress, 3 "nice" shirts (wearable with skirts or trousers), 1 pair black loafers, 1 pair black heels. They've come in handy for funerals.

I am finally (at less than a month away from 30) beginning to feel like I have a stylish wardrobe, or like I even have a clue what style is.

I used to be a principled tomboy (WTFSKIRTS! EWPINKNO!), and then devolved to garden-variety schlub, but now I actually wear skirts and dresses (and flats instead of tennies to walk to work, and all that.

For work, I have dresses, skirts, a few suits for super dressy days, and straight leg trousers. a typical work outfit tends to be some combination of cami and/or silky empire top, sweater or jacket, skirt or trousers, and high heels. I cycle through based on what interests me that day and what's available (meaning actually hanging up and looking nice, instead of in a wrinkled pile on my chair... I'm really horrible about that).

For casual, I've been making a real effort to eliminate the last vestiges of true schlub... begone, shapeless flannels from high school. Dark wash jeans and interesting tops with city sneakers or cute flats. Maybe a scarf. I'm into scarves lately. In the summer, skirts and dresses -- I'm another one who has stopped wearing shorts.

For going out, I have nice dresses for romantic evenings out with The Boy, but what I lack is what I'd call city chic... or maybe I have the elements of it and just don't know how to put it together. But on the rare occasions that I get dragged to a trendy DC bar on a saturday night (*shudder*), I'd really like to be able to show the gaggle of 21 year old flibbertigibbets in their identical skintight black dresses what a real woman looks like.

The other area I need to work on is accessories. I don't usually buy accessories (except earrings), so I just wear a few basic pieces of silver jewelry all the time. No variety. I want to try to start spicing things up a bit, but I'm still very lazy in that regard. Except for the scarf thing.

Other than that, I'm very happy with the progress I've made on my wardrobe over the last year... I've gotten rid of a ton of old junk, and started to focus a little more on quality and fit instead of quantity and "oh, that's kinda cute," and it's really paying off. So yeah, I'm happy, and yeah, I'd say my wardrobe represents me pretty well (although my inner tomboy would vehemently disagree).

Yeah, more or less, it's classic stuff I've been wearing forever and I'll be wearing forever unless I get fat.

What things woudld you like to add to it?

A few months ago I was about to get something I've always resisted getting -- a midnight blue suit with dramatic gray chalk stripes, much wider than the couple pinstripe suits I own (one light gray one charcoal). They didn't carry my size, I took it as a sign. No chalk stripes.

What things do you want to or wish you could get rid?

Want -- I'm OK. Rid? Some really old jeans that got ripped but they're worn so beautifully I am attahced to them.

How do you cycle through what you have (i.e. do you wear everything once for a week, and then start over the next week? Or something else?)

I cycle, not weekly though.

Do you think your clothes represent you well?

I suppose they do. As I said it's mostly classic stuff.
