Photofilter - Digitizing Slides . .Does anyone have any experience with this type of slide reader?[More:] My childhood friend's father was a professional photographer, and when he died, he left a metric ass tonne of slides behind, and a lot of them have me and/or my family and my block in them.

Plus, I have a couple thousand slides of my own that would be nice to regale people with (looking around), or at least dump into Flickr.

So, please chime in if you have digitized slides before and have advice.

Thanks!
Here's a link that compares the various methods. The service he links to will do it for 47 cents a scan.

Thank you doctor_negative. I have been clueless about all of this.

You could also pick up a used Nikon Coolscan. If you do, be sure it's not an ancient one with a SCSI interface (unless you have an ancient computer to go with it).

Basically, you get what you pay for when you're digitizing slides.

From what I've read about these kinds of things (I looked into getting the one that goes onto the front of the D70), they're pretty crappy. They might be good enough for snapshotty-type stuff, but if you're looking for any serious level of quality, I'd second Doctor Neg. The old coolscans are fairly easy to come by, and give a minimum of quality.

Piggybacking.......I've been thinking of getting the one that digitizes negatives, but I've only seen them in Hammacher -Schlemmer's catalog and this stuff on Amazon. Bunny feedback?

I've scanned slides on an HP Photosmart S20 film scanner and an Epson 3170 flatbed. I wouldn't particularly recommend either as far as really good quality. But passable for old family slides that are a bit out of focus anyway. I wouldn't even want to think of doing a thousand slides in them. It'd take forever. I think there's an optional slide feeder for the nikon coolscan though.

Well these slides are the family photos of a Pulitzer Prize winning photographer. So I may go cheap for most of them, but for the really outstanding ones, pay to get them done professionally.
