Sometimes, when having a birthday, it’s difficult not to think to yourself, “this is the bitterest pill (I ever had to swallow)”. Not when you’re young, mind you; when you’re an absolute beginner, every day is a fresh start! As one ages, though, it becomes harder to keep the news of the world from making you want to scrape away the modern world altogether. Going underground starts to seem like a good idea.
But before you jump on that funeral pyre, ask yourself: just who is the five o’clock hero? Your time here is precious. You’ve got a solid bond in your heart, and you know it. Ignore the ghosts in their quest for pretty green. Set the house ablaze, go down in the tube station at midnight and hop on the trans-global express right out of that town called Malice. It’s time for truth, not disguises. David Watts isn’t one of the little boy soldiers, and Liza Radley isn’t the girl on the phone.
And you? Say to yourself, “I’m different now. It’s my birthday, and today is the gift.”
Oh my god, so sorry not to have had a chance to check this thread till now! My sister had shoulder surgery on Valentine's day, and so our mom came to town yesterday to help out with the kids, so I spent a good chunk of my birthday in traffic between our house, LAX, and Pasadena. I did also get to enjoy chocolate cake and the enthusiastic singing of my nephews, so that was pretty awesome.
Thanks for all the good wishes, everyone! I can't believe I'm 39. I think I'll be like Jack Benny and just stay here.
