12 February 2008

I love Farmer's Markets. Today, there was a middle-aged man playing incredible guitar and singing "Yesterday."[More:] I dropped a few dollars in his jar. He was really excellent and deserved it.

I also spent about $10 to put together a care package for a friend who's about to do her orals for her masters. Some of it came from CVS - bubble stuff and a box of crayons (which I think always cheer people up) - and then some soap and honey sticks from the market. The soap man spent about five minutes wrapping up the soap with a little brown ribbon and a spray of flowers. People were standing around talking politics; the Obama love is alive and well in LA farmer's markets (not really a huge surprise, given the demographics.) I also stopped in the thrift store and got a cute plaid wool skirt - it needs a little hemming to be supercute but it's close.

What was good about your day?
What a lovely day!

Our farmer's markets (proper) are a long way away. We did have a winter farmer's market last weekend, with mostly meats and cheeses and some kale and leeks and stuff like that. But we only have 3 of those in winter - otherwise, it's not til May.

My day was good because I received a beautiful keychain made of glass beads as a surprise in the mail. It was a thank-you gift from a woman I met recently who works at the museum of the Choctaw Nation in Oklahoma. It was really pretty and unexpected.

I'm sorry for all y'all who have to wait for the markets to start up. Ours goes year-round -- 8-1 on Saturday, and also on Wednesday afternoons. (In the winter, it shuts down at 6. Spring and summer, it goes until dark, and they have beer and live music! This year, the Wednesday night deal starts early because the time changes early. Woot!)

Right now we're smack in the middle of citrus season. Also, lots of winter greens. Beets/turnips/etc. will start up soon. And then cherries!

I don't mean to rub it in, but it's pretty awesome.

We have the Ballard Farmer's Market, which is also year-round - the last time we went, it was pissing down rain and maybe 42 degrees. Yay for fresh produce, but it wasn't exactly the picture they show on the website.

In the summer, we also have a few neighborhood markets as well. (I'd forgotten that the U-District market is year-round as well... we may have to stop by there this weekend.)

Oh, my day... uh, nothin' special. Although I did make a nifty sandwich for lunch: turkey and bacon with pesto on olive bread. That was worth getting out of bed for. Otherwise, meh.

I had drinks with a friend I hadn't seen for a while, and that was awesome.

I did some good counseling work, and that was awesome.

I did some eh counseling work, and I reminded myself that that's just kind of part of the process, and that was awesome.

I am watching the dog show, and watching my cat watch the dog show, and that is awesome.

I'm going to the farmer's market today! Yay! There are not usually buskers there, just a giant circle of tub-drummers and such. Hippieville, USA.
