We all need more news like this [Denver Post] [More:]

(that's Louisville, Colorado y'all). I used to live right next door to this lake.

lucky people all around. smart kid to use his backpack to reach her.

irony: the dog got out just fine, unsurprising considering it's a Lab (a breed selectively bred to tolerate cold water hunting conditions.)

Aside: I sincerely hope the dumb county doesn't end up billing the kid's parents for any rescue response costs. Colorado has one of those 'backcountry liability' laws that's targeted at people who do dumb things and have to be rescued whilst climbing / skiing / hiking, and I believe it also applies to open space parks.
Good for him! And I'm glad the pooch got out, too, I gotta say. :)

enh, chewie, I'm not impressed with the woman going after the dog and getting herself in the soup.

you should NEVER, EVER go out onto the ice to rescue an animal. EVER. Call first, get the experts involved. 9 times out of 10 a dog like this (especially a cold-water hunting breed, sheesh) is going to be fine.

aaaand... this all ignores the simple fact that this park has a leash law. Which the county has been cracking down on, owing to issues like this.

so... yeah.

well yeah it didn't seem like such a great idea - that why all I cared about was the pooch!

Great story, anyway. Amazing that the kid even stopped, or wasn't wearing earbuds with music cranked so high he'd never have heard her.

This is nice enough and all, but if he was well enough to save a woman from a lake, then he should have been able to make it through Algebra II.

Wow. What a kid!

Lovely story! And I can imagine this being quite the mental/emotional confidence boost for a kid his age who is likely going through all the confusing issues that adolescence brings, especially concerning self image and agency. Not too shabby to be able to think, "hey, I'm a hero - I saved someone's life!" when those self-doubts come nagging.
