maybe i should be voting republican? just got a mass email from a friend of mine announcing her pregnancy,[More:] and sadly, my first thought was "but.... she's not married...." when i told my girlfriend of my un-progressive reaction, she replied "pfffft... get with the times, 'out-of-wedlock' is the new black!" heh.
If I hit about 38 and I'm still not married, I'll probably have a baby on my own. I hope my friends are supportive and don't have the reaction that you did!

Pregnancy announcements via mass e-mail? I don't know how I feel about that. Important question: did the e-mail include a copy of the sonogram?

Why is that important? (Just curious.)

Huh. Most of my friends have announced their pregnancies via mass email. Hells, we live all around the world, what to do? Make individual phone calls?

I could write a blog on the topic, and almost did, but I'll spare you all.

I think it's still weird for me to hear that anyone my age is having babies, regardless of marital status. I feel too young for that.

So that may be playing into it as well. I mean, you're probably somewhat prepared to hear that friends are getting married, so you expect that, and then a few years from now you'll start getting used to friends having babies, but this friend kind of jumped the queue, if that makes sense, maybe?

When they started announcing Mass via email pregnancy, I figured it was about time to find a new congregation.

just for the record, i didn't react that way in disgust, it was a thought that popped into my head instantly, and then i thought "well, that doesn't really make a difference...oh, that's kinda funny, i seem to have some ingrained sense of 'family' that i don't actually agree with, huh...."

Why is that important? (Just curious.)

it's not. i'm very happy for my friend and i'm sure she'll be a great mother. and her boyfriend seems like a nice enough guy the few times i've met him. it's all good. i'm on team-baby!

this friend kind of jumped the queue

maybe, last time i saw her she wasn't talking about getting married or starting a family.

dno, I'd have probably have had the exact same reaction. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with that. I don't translate my off the cuff reactions and feelings into policy positions though, as they are not legitimate grounds for making such decisions. and that's what makes me a liberal.

We can't deny that we are social beings and experience normative ethics - we're a part of the society we live in. However, we also have the advantage of reason when it comes time to make laws. Fun stuff!

This reminds me of an old straw man argument about the death penalty. Someone will ask me "well, how would you feel if somebody killed your family? Wouldn't you want them to die?" To which I would reply "Sure I would, but under those circumstances my emotions shouldn't be the basis for public policy."

dno, I was asking TPS why it was important to know if the email included a copy of the sonogram.

Could be worse, anyway. Your first thought wasn't "oh god, is it mine?".

I haven't announced any pregnancies via email -- THAT I KNOW OF! (wink, wink)
