Co-opt and water down are pretty much the name of the game whenever something is threatening to the powers that be, which makes me wonder whether that is a systemic defense mechanism we have as a society, or if there's a room full of cigar puffing hegemons thinking this stuff up. For what it's worth, a lot of MLK Day volunteer efforts begin and end with reflection, which could be used to stir up those old subversive ideas, so cynicism and outright boycotting these events is way less useful than injecting yourself into and leading them.
