Jeremy Beadle. Dead at 59. I'm pretty shocked by this. He was a staple of my Saturday night TV when I was a young teenager.

I absolutely loathed those prank shows he used to do. But he was an intelligent man, and, I understand, something of an intellectual off screen.

I kept trying to tell people this at work and they all thought it was a joke and asked for a punchline. It was only when I whipped out my iPhone and fired up BBC news that they believed me. So, yes, unexpected and a bit of a shock. I also bet that it'll be referenced in this week's B3ta mailout.

Strangely affecting, considering I too found his contributions to popular culture pretty damn irritating. He certainly was a fixture of my juvenescent television days. According to the figures, almost a third of the population watched his programmes at the height of his popularity!
