The Song Retains The Name I’m guessing that MeCha is not Led Zeppelin Fan Central, but there might be a couple of you who’ll appreciate this: last week, I was given a stack of Zep bootlegs. I am now taking this opportunity to share one of them with you. [More:]

I swap boots with a co-worker, who rememberd that I had a number of Zeppelin recordings and burned me copies of some of his favorites. I’m not a huge fan of the band, myself - Science Girl is the Ledhead in our house. Having said that, this is a really nice recording.

The album is titled Going Mobile, which would have made more sense if it was A) the show from Mobile, Alabama (I have a copy of that one, too, by the way; the only title it has is the city name and the date), or B) a bootleg of The Who (see, they have a song by that title, and… oh, never mind). At any rate, this show took place in Salt Lake City on 5/26/73. I don’t think I’ve got the entire show here, but the songs that are most likely missing (Dazed & Confused, featuring Jimmy Page’s interminable “The Creation? Never heard of ‘em” violin bow guitar solo, and the 97-minute drum solo that is Moby Dick) are pretty boring anyway.

So, without any further ado:

Rock and Roll
Celebration Day
Black Dog
Over the Hills and Far Away
Misty Mountain Hop
Since I’ve Been Lovin’ You
No Quarter
The Song Remains the Same
The Rain Song
There is at least 1 big Zep fan here. Me. Thank You! I'd share (not that I have anything special to share) but I'm basically scared shitless of the music police.

Will take any recordings of No Quarter, any day. But divshare is muy slow this evening.

Boots are fairly safe, I think, since you're not "stealing" anything that was for sale. I certainly wouldn't post an entire copyrighted album, of course; artists deserve compensation for their work. The only ones who are losing a sale here are the parasites people who sell bootlegs, and since none of that money goes back to the artist, screw 'em.

JanetLand, I think divshare is working on/upgrading their servers right now.

All my music was ituned. I set it so that the files will also play in quicktime (M4A files). Are these share-able? What's a good way to do so? I've used yousendit.com for my friends with itunes.

rainbaby, it's my understanding that m4a files can be shared unless you bought them from the iTunes shop, in which case they're DRMed. I could be all wet, though.

As for how to share them, I personally like divshare. I prefer it to yousendit because divshare allows the listener to preview the track before they download.

I've downloaded and played m4a files, but I have to play them in itunes. I generally like mp3s better as I can use them in winamp which is my usual player. There's probably some way to convert my m4as to mp3s, but I haven't bothered to look.

You got me looking around at bootlegs. Looks like you can get the Led Zep 2007 reunion concert here. Haven't tried downloading it myself yet though.

So anything I bought from itunes, stays itunes. I love my ipod, but sneaky bastards. I know there is a way to do it, I've observed savvy types do so, but not over their shoulders, alas.

Sorry, that download goes through rapidshare, which makes you either wait for your download, or pay for a 'premium' account... I should have tried it before I posted it here...

It's possible to convert iTunes m4a's to mp3's - burn them to a disc and then rip the disc - but I think you end up losing information.

You know, Robert Plant looked pretty hot in some of those midnight movies I saw back in the 80s.

Close the doors, put out the light
You know they won't be home tonight
The snow falls hard and don't you know
The winds of Thor are blowing cold
They're wearing steel that's bright and true
They carry news that must get through

They choose the path where no-one goes
They hold no quarter,
They hold no quarter.
Oh...

Cool, Thanks bmarkey. I like me some led zep. I'm a weirdo and like all kinds of stuff. I like Led Zep, but I don't care too much for Dylan. Go figure...

Oh, and that's a great photo of Robert Plant

Zeppelin peaked with "Communication Breakdown" for me. There are other songs that I like, but that was definitely the best thing they ever did.

As for Dylan, it took me until I was deep into my forties to really start to get a handle on him. I've always liked him on some level, but I missed a lot of nuance for a long time.

Another thanks bmarkey.

I'm early in my 40's and I still don't get Dylan. I appreciate that he wrote some great songs, and spoke to a generation, but he just doesn't do anything for me. I love this live Led Zep tho. No Quarter is awesome. It was a group that was much greater than the sum of the parts. It was a group of guys that magically got together, just like the other band you mention, the Who. I can't see either of these bands without the guys they had. Man, listening to these tracks, I can totally see being in the crowd and smoking a doobie and relaxing to the sounds. Great songs, thanks bmarkey!

I should also say that this concert represents a band actually improvising and performing songs rather than trying to sound exactly like the record as so many bands try to do today. They're playing and feeding off the audience. The song isn't an end, but a means to the end.

Yeah, I like the looseness to the performances. I also like that for once, John Paul Jones' bass isn't buried in the mix. :)

I'll take the amphetamine overload of "Communication Breakdown" over the fistfull-of-reds vibe of... well, just about any of their attempts at the blues. YMMV.
