27 January 2008

I had an ocular migraine this morning. It was my first one. I asked mrs chewie if she would still love me if I had a brain tumor. She said yes. Both my parents had multiple strokes and I really, REALLY would rather not follow them. It was probably triggered by that creepy artist picture I linked in the random thoughts thread.
I get those. I've never had a brain tumor or strokes though. But the symptoms can be similar.

I haven't had one in years (I seemed to get a bunch while going through my divorce), but I remember how unsettling they were. They came before the pain started, so at least I had an early warning!

I get small ones occasionally. For years I had no idea what they were and was afraid of stroke or some such. The first one I had was by far the worst, completely filling my visual field for 20 minutes or so. My father had cluster headaches, and I've wondered if it's related at all.

Mine was in my upper left visual field. It looked like I was looking through crinkled cellophane, and I lost almost all my peripheral vision on that side. The whole thing only took about 15 minutes tops. I waited for some monster type headache to ensue, but I just had a mild hint of a one the rest of the day. Do you guys get headaches after yours?

My sister gets them - she says hers are stress induced, and her doctor told her to take magnesium potassium something supplement, which she says has helped.

I've heard cluster headaches are totally no fun at all. Do. Not. Want!

No headaches associated with mine.

Judging by how they affected my father, cluster headaches are indeed no fun. He used to say they were like a red hot poker in the eye, and I see the wikipedia article says just the same thing. I've always been very thankful I didn't get them.

One of my friends gets cluster headaches. They have made him nearly suicidal. I think if he didn't smoke pot, which provides him a measure of pain relief, he wouldn't be here today.

The first ocular migraine I had really freaked me out; but then so did my first migraine proper which followed soon afterward (I was twenty-eight or so when I had them). I've only had a handful of them since, and in all but one occasion (the recentest) a big bad headache came on the next day.

I've had about three of these over the past five years. No headache, never had conventional migraines, no other symptoms, no stroke, no brain tumor (as far as I know). I'm fine.
